Sometimes its quite difficult to put 2 and 2 together, to see the connections between seemingly unrelated events. There are sundry reasons for this, including our narrow-minded ways and our decidedly unanalytical and superficial modes of thinking and reasoning. Another is our lack of perspective and context, which makes of facts and events apparently free-floating and unrelated and random phenomena, when in fact the opposite is the case. An air of unreality sets in, a sense of absurdity, when an actor or character or some individual comes out of nowhere to expound forth, revealing this wonderland for all to see.
Such is the case with Dick Cheney, who
suddenly has reemerged from his rabbit hole, his underground hideaway, to pontificate once again on the evils of Saddam Hussein and of WMD. Methinks the man has tarried for far too long in Wonderland, and perhaps may have overindulged at the Mad Hatter's Party, for the Vice-President is clearly out of touch, and perhaps out of touch with reality. Otherwise he would have gotten with the programme, which nowadays leans toward the Bush Administration's methodical admission that there really were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq after all to warrant invading and then occupying that unfortunate country. But with Mr. Cheney reemerging from his underground sanctuary and then still pontificating about WMD in Iraq, what we have here is either a failure to communicate between different arms of the administration or we have what amounts to a theater of the absurd.
Mr. Cheney has been away for too long, and is either out of the loop, defending his WMD and hawkish record or he's simply playing some administration game. The last possibility seems the more likely, with either Cheney getting defensive about the anti-WMD trend or participating in some administration act where the administration at one and the same time retreats from its WMD claims while still insisting on the possibility that one day they will be found, whether in Iraq, Syria or elsewhere, even if the US has to start another war to prove that dubious claim.
The administration may want to continue the search for WMD in Iraq not because it expects to eventually find any but because not to do so would be an admission that it was wrong about Iraqi WMD, at least, or at the most misled the American people about its reasons for going to war. Cheney's latest delusional remarks are meant to serve as a backstop for the administration WMD claims, which complements David Kay's resignation last week as head of the UN WMD inspection team in Iraq. His replacement by Charles Delfer is meant to convey the impression that the search for WMD isn't over, though it really is, in keeping with the theory laid out above about the Bush Administration not wanting to make the ultimate admission that there was never any WMD to be found in Iraq, and that this rationale for making war on Iraq was sheer nonsense.
