Could a National Guardsman in Iraq get a year off to work on a campaign?
This just hit me. CNN has been reporting this as just the most normal thing in the world that Bush took a year off from his Texas Air National Guard duties to work on some guys campaign...during the time that the Vietnam War was raging. I have never been in the Guard so I don't know how common this is. Is it common? Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

Don

1. That's a great question
Maybe a few guardsmen should write letters asking to do such and include the fact that georgie did, while 15,000 died in Vietnam.

3. I don't know who said this, maybe Michael Moore
But one of my friends was talking about somebody discussing this issue. They were interviewing someone about it (or something, I am butchering the scenario).

Anyway, the point is, when the "request" was mentioned, the question was asked in the interview "is there a standard form that a soldier can fill out for this" and the answer was just "no".

Maybe that would have been funny if I remembered who was involved, or the context...

4. Well, I think they should all apply for permission and find out.

5. if they were in iraq
they could be tried as a deserter and desertion form a war zone can range in penalty up to death. If, however, the guardsman was stateside but on active duty they would probably be tried for deriliction penalties ranging from dishonorable discharge with punitive letter up to a few years in prison depending on whether lives were endangered, time of war etc.

Bush really has no business claiming to be a military veteran at all. His 36 days of performing gaurd duty to avoid getting drafted to vietnam after 2 written warnings for dereliction of duty (as opposed to the non son of a congressman being locked up) hardly qualify. The closest he has been to a war zone was either choking his plastic chicken or his crotch grabbing cowboy mugging on board an aircraft carrier in his very own bagpipe while rome burns moment.
