2. I believe it refers to the movie "Signs"
in which Mel Gibson's children wore tinfoil hats to prevent aliens from controlling their thoughts. Here, it refers to excessive paranoia and conspiracy theory.

I haven't seen the movie, and don't know if it was referring to an earlier precedent, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

5. Earlier precedent for tin foil hats...
I seem to remember 5-10 years back, there was a guy in New Orleans who became somewhat of an icon among conspiracy theorists due to his penchant for tin foil hats, which were (as others have pointed out) to shield one from the government's (or alien's, or whoever's) mind-control rays.

This guy put out a zine regularly including his conspiracy rants, i think (he may still do so).

3. Tongue-in-cheek for "crazy conspiracy theory"...
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 10:57 AM by JHB
... it alludes to people (usually with schitzophrenia or some similar condition) who wear hats of tinfoil to block the "mind-control rays" from whatever they think is out to get them (aliens, the Governemnt, whatever).

4. Yes
I knew such a man once. He was mentally ill, and did indeed have a tinfoil hat. He also wrapped his house in it, for what it's worth.

I was being sarcastic.

Yes it IS and WAS a conspiracy.

The Bush Family history is ALL conspiracy.
BushSR being the lead player in IRAN-CONTRA
BushSR being CIA
BushSR and BIN LADEN FAMILY as business partners
BushSR and Carlyle
BushSR and BCCI , and the war criminal Kissinger.

BushJR and James Bath
James Bath suspended from National Guard same as AWOL Bush
Even on SAME US Military document.
James Bath and BCCI
James Bath and CIA and BushSR
James Bath funnelled Bin Laden money into BushJR oil venture

YES IT IS A CONSPIRACY

PNAC BFEE OCTOPUS

All wanted a war with Iraq
9-11 was 'convenient' wasn't it ?

Like the PNAC papers show -- they "needed" a "Pearl Harbor"
type EVENT to put their 'plan' into action.

Convenient. Wasnt it ?

CONSPIRACY IS MORE LIKE IT.

10. and this..
"Now, the word "conspiracy" has been so demonized in America. America is
the home of conspiracy. There has never been a conspiracy as large as
Enron. It's the largest financial conspiracy on Earth. And what is a
political party but a conspiracy to take power? We are the home of
conspiracies, and fixing prices, and getting our money away from us for wars."

I remember the early days on DU right after 9/11 and anyone who said they thought the government was behind 9/11 was accused of needing a tin foil hat. How times and things have changed.

13. Definately changed...
People here who accuse the guv-ment of conspiracy to murder its own citizens in 9-11 need two tinfoil hats. (Maybe you should go to the free republic? They also have people who think the guv-mint is behind everything evil in the world.)

15. Maybe you should look
at all the evidence and do a little reading up on the matter. Educate yourself a bit. The evidence is CONCLUSIVE that the gov was behind it - and a great deal of the American people are aware of that fact - the widows of 9/11, the victims families of 9/11, anybody who understands and knows the workings of our government knows, as well as the Citizens Action Committee. Free Republic is not the place for me - they love * too much and would never be able to consider that he is in on this up to his eyeballs - and then some.

My point was that it was so far out to most people on this board that it was "tin foil" and unheard of - and now is pretty much accepted as a fact.

Stick around here - you may just accidentally learn something.

16. Operation Northwoods was US Military plan to kill Americans
OPERATION NORTHWOODS

The Joint Chiefs of Staff plan to terrorize and
kill Americans was OPERATION NORTHWOODS.

Why would the US military and industrial complex
push such a plan ? -- to help 'justify' a war to the
duped American public.

That 'plan' was real.

The plan was not just proposed by a lone military
or CIA faction, IT WAS PROPOSED AND SIGNED OFF BY THE
CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF.

And its all true.

OUR Goverment wanted to terrorize and kill Americans
to scare Americans 'into a war'.

Just go read all the de-classified documents
at the NATIONAL SECURITY ARCHIVES.

Its all there to read the treasonous plan to
have the US military commit terrorism on Americans

17. National Security Archives - Operation Northwoods
the actual US military documents from the National Security Archives(online) that the author used for his book - BODY OF SECRETS, which exposed and documented the Joint Chiefs of Staff plans to terrorize/murder Americans solely to 'justify' to the American public the war the military wanted to start against Cuba - Operation Northwoods.

There is absolutely no doubt. The information is not heresay, nor is conjecture. The National Security Archives documentation is the March 13, 1962 TOP SECRET Joint Chiefs of Staff's report.

....Woodward

Bamford himself writes that Operation Northwoods may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government.

here's an excerpt of the book review at Amazon -
"...In the name of anticommunism, they proposed launching a secret and bloody war of terrorism against their own country in order to trick the American public into supporting an ill-conceived war they intended to launch against Cuba."

access the pdf file at the National Security Archives site

April 30, 2001

In his new exposé of the National Security Agency entitled Body of Secrets, author James Bamford highlights a set of proposals on Cuba by the Joint Chiefs of Staff codenamed OPERATION NORTHWOODS. This document, titled Justification for U.S. Military Intervention in Cuba was provided by the JCS to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara on March 13, 1962, as the key component of Northwoods. Written in response to a request from the Chief of the Cuba Project, Col. Edward Lansdale, the Top Secret memorandum describes U.S. plans to covertly engineer various pretexts that would justify a U.S. invasion of Cuba. These proposals - part of a secret anti-Castro program known as Operation Mongoose - included staging the assassinations of Cubans living in the United States, developing a fake Communist Cuban terror campaign in the Miami area, in other Florida cities and even in Washington, including sink a boatload of Cuban refugees (real or simulated), faking a Cuban airforce attack on a civilian jetliner, and concocting a Remember the Maine incident by blowing up a U.S. ship in Cuban waters and then blaming the incident on Cuban sabotage. Bamford himself writes that Operation Northwoods may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government.

this is another excellent review that refers to Bob Woodward and how difficult it should be be find out such "secret" information and actually getting people to allow you to go on the record.

18. A tin-foil hat story.......
Many years ago.....I was a security supervisor in a Vermont federal office building. A lot of very strange people seem to flock to federal offices, the post office in particular. One day, a young man walked up to me and said:

"I'm wondering if I have to check in with the local police department, because I am such a good foil."

I stood there, dumbfounded. I had no idea what he was talking about. After quickly thinking of something to respond with, I punted. My answer was:

"I'm not sure sir, why don't you ask them? Their office is just down the street."

I told the rest of my guards about it, and none of them could figure it out either. After chuckling about it the rest of the day, I told my fiancee (now wife) about it that evening. She just happened to be out of town visiting her mother, a former psych nurse. When the story had been relayed to my future mother-in-law, I was immediately taught the entire history of the tin-foil hat.

Apparently, this is no small, isolated phenomenon. Among mentally ill patients, tin-foil is a common tool to either block or receive signals from voices or planets or whatever. In this man's case, he was trying to receive (I guess) and therefore thought he should tell someone.

I was completely dumbfounded. My mom-in-law was very serious, and the conversion was very informative, if a bit weird. The biggest help was how she told me how to deal with a potentially violent mentally ill person, and I was able to pass this on to my guards. The government, of course, had neglected to train us on that. They were far more interested in making sure we knew which form to fill out for which obscure purpose.
