the last word on transsexualism
sorry, christian's post was getting too unwieldly for my computer

while the trans community (careful, using the term "trans" is likely to get you summarily banned from some discussion forums) appreciates in general being included on the GLB fight, too often the "T" is de facto left out.

transsexualism is NOT transgenderism, and a whole frickin' lot of trans IDed people would rather not be associated with the queer community (see, we don't ID as "trans", we ID as Male or Female)

odds are YOU know a trans person, and don't have a clue.

it should be unnacceptable on a "progressive" forum to use trans ID or queer ID as an insult. there are plenty of other ways to insult coulter.

i dunno who posted that christian should "get over it," but that's pretty fucking insulting. i'll get over it when YOU get over it.

we are everywhere

2. time to flame me...
but I see the following as a logical flaw in the argument from the previous thread (since this is a continuation and my computer is slow). Transsexuals are born that way, right? Start with that supposition. It is not ok to make fun of people for the way they are born.
Stupid people are born that way. It is not ok to make fun of them because that is the way they were born (yet people say "we should focus on her stupidity"). So why should people be allowed to bash coulter simply b/c she is "stupid"? Answer: by this argument, we cannot, if she is indeed "dumb", we must avoid that, and simply discredit her arguments while not attacking her intellect. Just the logical conclusion to that argument, don't know if that even made sense, or if that's what people were even implying. I probably should just get more sleep:)

3. is she stupid?
no, it's not okay to make fun of stupid people either, but coulter isn't stupid. she is crafty and manipulative.

it's easy to pick aprt her arguments without making it a personal issue. why not just focus on that?

note: you'll get no flames from me unless you say something heinously ignorant....

4. if you want logical flaws

calling her stupid is ad hominen. A logical flaw, a fallacy.

There's another logical fallacy called false analogy.I think your dumb/transsexual slur analogy is a fallacy. Transphobic slurs against women is not quite the same thing as name calling, as calling someone "dumb" -- (depending upon the instance) it is usually misogyny. That's my opinion.

edit - spelling.

5. All I know is what I will do
I will treat you with respect and won't use your trans ID to smear another person as though the LABEL TRANS is a negative thing.

Ann Coulter is a mean spirited person who must stoop to dominating her ideological opponents with pejorative terms. Some Du'ers have an awful lot in common with her. Interesting, eh?

We aren't all mean spirited morons.

Stick around.

6. I've been put off by the "Ann the Man" name calling too

and I think it's great that you posted what you did about transsexuals. I have a tran family member and talk about courage! These people should not be scorned.

Not to defend the name-callers, but I think people revel in pointing out her unattractive physical appearance because she is the Repub bimbo postergirl and tries to act the part of "pretty blond fascist."

edit for intelligibility

"It should be unnacceptable on a progressive forum to use trans ID or queer ID as an insult."

Damn straight. And the Lounge is even worse. Someone here even has this as their user I.D.

The prevailing response to complaints of this nature from the admins is that anyone who is against Bush is welcomed here, and any assertions that slurs of this nature (not even bringing up the misogynist slut/whore/bitch that one sees on a regular basis) are not welcoming, is usually met with cries of "censorship". Whether the board wants to admit it or not, what is being practiced is a form of selective elimination, wherein certain folks are allowed to indirectly anti-welcome some of the most progressive people on the left i.e. feminists, gays, etc.

As a middle aged queer I know damn well that many of my progressive friends would run screaming out of here after seeing some of the posts that are allowed to stay here. So I don't recommend D.U. to friends, sadly. And I am sure there will be accusations of "uptightness'", p.c. ness, etc, but what I find most sad in these assertions is the denial, or lack of acceptance of, or lack of belief in, or experience with (???????) the wonderful, awesome, fantastic group of people that I have spent most of my adult life surrounded by, meaning the GBLT communtiy. We're here, we're queer, and we would be such an asset to this board, WE REALLY DO EXIST. I think people who repeatedly post slurs have limited experience with the feminist and GBLT communities, if they have any at all. It's a sad indictment on D.U. that this goes on.
