First Lady (Smoker) Warns Women on Heart Disease
She loves to eat enchiladas and barbecue, but in kicking off the start of ``Heart Awareness Month,'' first lady Laura Bush said Monday that while she used to resolve every year to lose weight, her goal now is to ``get and stay healthy.''

(snip)

She called on Americans, especially women, to: exercise daily, eat healthy foods, avoid tobacco, refrain from drinking too much alcohol and get preventive screenings to detect heart problems early.

``Women often take more time taking care of other people instead of themselves,'' she said. ``Oh, we might soak in the bathtub or get a facial, but these are little perks that make us look good on the outside. I'm talking about taking care of our heart by eating healthy food, exercising and visiting the doctor.''

She said she tries to walk at least three times a week.

``If my mother-in-law, Barbara Bush, can swim 88 laps at a time, the rest of us surely can walk for 30 minutes,'' Mrs. Bush said.

1. how nice--thank you Mrs. Stepford
Edited on Mon Feb-02-04 02:18 PM by Marianne

She soaks in the tub and gets a facial, excuse me "we" women do so we "look good" on the outside (fooling everyone? Pretending? what little Eves we all are eh?), but the real stuff that shows some real healthy results, like a resting pulse rate of 45, is done by him , Mr. Wonderful who does not seek to look good, because well because men just don't do silly things that vain and self centered. Gee you're wonderful Mr. Murgatroyd.

Can we believe what she says? After all she said Bush* wrote her an Intimate Love Poem and then later said he didn't really write the poem.(I wonder who did) What can we believe and what can't we believe?

Her mother-in-law nags and bullies her, so now she wants to nag and bully the women of America.

9. I remember when Betty Ford railed against drugs
when she was high. Remember Pat Nixon? Lush.
and Nancy Reagan said just say NO while she was calling up witchdoctors to predict foreign policy decisions.
These GOP women are a laugh riot.

10. Heart-health interview w/ Laura on CNN - no mention of smoking
CNN ran a John King interview wiith Laura several times today, and not once did I hear her mention smoking as a risk factor. . This is not only hypocrtical, but irresponsible.

12. Oh come on
I'm not one for defending Republican Stepford wives either but you actually CAN be a smoker yourself and still encourage others to be healthy. Just because I'm chemically addictive to nicotine doesn't mean I can't say "you shouldn't eat McDonald's 24/7" or "you should get moderate excercise"

This is only hypocritical if she says "I never endanger my health" or "I'm have the world's healthiest heart"

Being a republican doesn't mean everything you say or do is in error

11. What is incredibly annoying about this is:
The part about visiting a doctor. How many millions of Americans are without health insurance? 43 million? Who are they going to go see?

I could rant on and on about the issues of American eating habits and obesity. Many Americans do not know what "eating healthy" is. PE is frequently cut or scaled back at schools when budgets get the ax. Yet it's an issue of personal responsibility, right? Wugh.

in a year. And in a kiddy pool besides.

I mean, ever take a look at that woman? She is old and she is certainly not trim and slim.

Whatever--there is nothing wrong with admitting that one is old and can only manage one walk a week. Why does this family always have to embellish, causing suspicion. It is as though they want urban legends over and over in spite of the incongruity of the claim.

There is not need for it, but they do it anyhow. It is as if the entire family is in competition constantly with some imaginary competitor. And this one is very laughable because the old bag looks as though she has alread spent too much time in the water.

Babs is old and bent and pot bellied. She looks like a normal old woman. There is no need to prop her up with this kind of embellishment. Even if she does manage to do those laps, her appearance certainly does not make it appear as if it does her that much good.

She has super coverage on her health care. She has not had a heart attack but we do not know really what other health problems she may have. Whatever she does have, besides her Graves disease, she is well taken care of--the family is rich and can well afford the best in health care services, and no doubt they do avail themselves of it.

Remember Poppy with his skin bleach or whatever it was that he had done--a Peel? I remeber he appeared with the evidence all over his face--probably at a fund raiser for Susan Collins, ME and that is why I remember this awful image of Poppy with his entire face all red and peeled.
