Sharpton working behind the scenes to oust Rangel
February 2, 2004 -- Rep. Charles Rangel ticked off Al Sharpton by not backing him for prez.N.Y. Post: G.N. Miller

Rev. Al Sharpton is working behind the scenes to oust Harlem's most famous and powerful elected official, Rep. Charles Rangel, The Post has learned.
Sharpton, furious at Rangel's support for retired Gen. Wesley Clark's ailing presidential campaign and convinced the 73-year-old lawmaker is past his prime, took time from his own quixotic bid for the Democratic presidential nomination a week ago to encourage Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV to enter the race.

"He told me he would back me if I run," said Powell, an East Harlem Democrat who's backing Sharpton for president.

"We had breakfast together, and he told me that he's with me and he's encouraging me to run."

I may disagree with Charlie Rangel on some issues, but if it is between him and someone Sharpton is supporting, I would choose Charlie in a heartbeat.

1. Adam Clayton Powell IV
doesn't have one tenth the gravitas in his body that Rep. Rangel has in his pinky. That action has all the earmarks of trying to destroy the Democrat party. That from someone who wants the Democrat nomination for President? To list Rep. Rangel's accomplishments would make Sharpton's actions obvious.

I think we have had enough entertainment(?) from the Reverend and it's about time for him to vanish from the Presidential nominating stage.

3. LOL if encouraging a young person to seek public office is

trying to destroy the Democratic party, the party is in much worse trouble than anybody suspected.

Even Sharpton's supporters concede that he will not win the nomination. He doesn't have any money.

Most of the people who would vote for him don't vote. Yes, if poor people voted, it WOULD be a revolution, but they don't, so just enjoy your politics as usual. Don't pay any attention to Sharpton. The issues he's talking about are past the point of a political solution.

2. Why don't we compile a list of what Rangle
has done for the Party and what Sharpton has done for the party.

I think we have the wrong one of them running for President!

4. Hope this doesn't go too far.
Rangel's been around for a long time, and has a pretty big base of support. Sharpton's a clown, always been a clown, but he's a dangerous clown. He has little actual support, even around his Brooklyn base, but that merely means he has little to lose by being a gadfly.

Adam Clayton Powell, the original one, is a big name-- even has a few streets named after him. His conviction for corruption and being thrown out of Congress was seen by a lot of people as racially inspired. Dixiecrats just coudn't have the Congressman from Harlem, USA getting too uppity.

This could get ugly if the ward heelers up there don't put a stop to it real soon.

One might take notice that Sharpton himself has never run for an office that he had the slightest chance of winning.

5. The Post is a RW libelous microphone
I don't believe anything they print until I see it backed up from unbiased sources.

8. This is in character for Sharpton
The only think shocking is that he is actually backing a Democrat to take out Rangel. Normally, he sells out to Republicans in order to settle personal vendettas.

6. Sloppy article that says nothing
How does Frederic U. Dicker, the author of this article, know that Sharpton is "furious" with Rangel and "convinced" that Rangel is "past his prime"? This is a paraphrase of what Powell is quoted as saying, not Sharpton.

This article provides one good quote, from neither Sharpton nor Rangel, only "a source close to Sharpton."

Part and parcel of the never ending smear campaign against Al Sharpton. Must make sure that the voiceless continue having no voice in this fabulous democracy of ours.

7. well....
... you have to admit whether it is true or not it is entirely believeable.

I've heard Sharpton say enough nutball things that I would not be a bit surprised. Maybe sometime we'll learn the whole story.
