When did the * Presidency jump the Shark?
Do you think that * is on a downward trend. If so when did it happen? Hopefully he will not improve before November.

1. The Flying Chimp act
even pulling a dictator out of a hat was nothing compared to the drama, the import, and well, the hubris of 'Mission Accomplished'

3. Remeber before 9/11?
Jeffords jumped
the economy was in the tank
he asked the Brazilian president if they had black people there

He was considered a joke both here and abroad.

Then the son of his father's business partner was "a really bad pilot" (Bush quote) and everyone really needed to believe he was the second coming (or the first coming as the case may be).

Now the country is starting to get back to the business at hand. People are remebering that he is a coked out frat boy.

The specific instance was either:

Catching Sadaam but having the attacks in Iraq continue unabated
or

O'Neil's book

Bush's don't govern well because they aren't really big fans of democracy.

5. At the SOTU address
There wasn't any single thing that I can think of... just a culmination of fuck up after fuck up after fuck up topped with a SOTU that made even non-politicals and Republican wonder "WTF???"

7. Yep the SOTU was a huge blunder, it was his chance to frame the debate
and Bush* offered nothing but stale platitudes...

What a moran...

6. The * pResidency jumped the shark............
When his handlers let it be known that he wasn't smart enough to eat snack foods without being supervised.

Killer pretzel, anyone?

(Although, one rumour has it that he actually received the injuries while on a drunken bender.)

BTW, how does one start a new thread at DU?

8. The new space race.
It fits the Jump the Shark model better than anything else. His presidency is heading downhill, so he goes to a rediculous plot device to try and boost ratings. Enter the space race.

That was absolutely, definitely "when he jumped the shark".

I was thinking the other day about that and wondered if anyone else had noticed that * "had jumped the shark."

12. The yellow cake thing...maybe around July or so.
If you go back and look at posts from back then, people are pretty desperate before then, and then while the questions started getting brought up to Ari Fleischer people were kind of surprised that questions were being asked.

13. The SC appointed the * Presidency and the Shark at the same time.
Consequently, it is impossible for his Presidency to jump the shark since it was preordained to happen. His selection jumped the shark.

15. The aircraft carrier
It was a tacit admission that since he lacked substance, style would have to suffice. It was utterly phoney, and he was so oblivious that he didn't seem to realize that it would only remind people of his AWOL thirty years earlier. From that day to this, events have been dictating to him rather than the other way around and it seems that everything he does falls apart. No WMDs, the drug plan he fought so hard for is not satisfying the group he targeted and the sudden increase in projected costs has outraged his conservative base. Even the capture of Saddam has accomplished nothing for him since casualties in Iraq seem unaffected or even higher, and there have been two serious terror threats (real or manufactured) at home.

The conservatives started out defending the aircraft carrier appearance, but not any more. In retrospect, he just looks silly.

16. It would be silly if * wasn't the President.
You've made great points and I don't have any argument. I'm just saying it's not silly. It's tragic and the joke is on US.

19. IIRC, it refers to a "Happy Days" episode
where the Fonz did a motorcycle jump over a shark... (the series went downhill afterwards)

now 'jump the shark" can refer to a moment when someone/something goes "too far" and has negative momentum afterwards

20. I remember that episode
Yeah. I know what you mean. It sucks when great TV shows hang around until they fall apart.

But it is interesting, the various perceptions in this thread of when Dubya "jumped the shark". But the truth is, we won't know if he made the landing until November. *sigh*

21. When good--or not so good--TV shows go bad
The original referent was the episode in Happy Days when Fonzy jumps the shark on his motorcycle. Term coined by--so they claim--this website:
http://www.jumptheshark.com/
--when two college roomates decided this was the moment after which the show declined, and then they generalized the concept.

Far as I can tell, it is a little fuzzy. In basically refers to that "high concept" moment when

a) a successful show loses its way because the writers/producers/director think they can do anything, no matter how over-the-top. Seems like a brilliant idea at the time, but in retrospect you discover you were--as they used to say--driving ahead of your headlights.

b) an unsuccessful show tries some over-the-top desperation move to rescue the ratings, not realizing that they are signalling their failure to the audience. (I think of the introduction of "Seven of Nine" on Voyager as a classic example. She didn't do anything to rescue the atrocious writing and production, but she sure looked hot in that spandex uniform. I'd watch it with the sound off.)

c) some mixture of the above.
