Quotes from Old Testament Book of Amos, with which to bash the GOP
I had never paid the slightest attention to the Old Testament
prophets, figuring that they were the most fanatical of the
patriarchal, misogynistic authoritarians.

But, to my surprise, the ex-activist Minister in my UU Church
quoted Amos today.

DUers, the next time some fundie comes after you, try this
stuff out on him:

Amos 2:6-7

....These are the words of the Lord:

....For crime after crime of Israel
....I shall grant them no reprieve,
....because they sell honest folk for silver
....and the poor for a pair of sandals.
....They grind the heads of the helpless into the dust
....and push the humble out of their way.

--------------------------------------------------------

Amos 5: 9 -12

....These are the words of the Lord to the people of Israel:

....You turn justice to poison and thrust righteousness to the ground,
....you hate a man who brings the wrongdoer to court
....and abominate him who speaks nothing less than the truth:
....for all this, because you levy taxes on the poor and
....extort a tribute of grain from them,
....though you have built houses of hewn stone, you will not live in them.

....For I know how many are your crimes, how monstrous your sins:
....you bully the innocent, extort ransoms, and in court push the destitute out of the way.

--------------------------------------------------------

Amos 8: 4-7

....Listen to this, you that grind the poor and suppress
....the humble in the land while you say,

...."When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain?
....When will the sabbath be past so that we may expose our wheat for sale,
....giving short measure in the bushel and taking overweight in silver,
....tilting the scales fraudulently, and selling the refuse of the wheat;
....that we may buy the weak for silver and the poor for a pair of sandals?"

...The Lord has sworn by the arrogance of Jacob: I shall never
....forget any of those activities of theirs.

--------------------------------------------------------

This goes right up there with the rebuttal to homosexuality as a stoning offense.

"they sell honest folk for silver"
"in court push the destitute out of the way"
"grind the heads of the helpless into the dust and push the humble out of their way"

Somebody ought to use these as campaign slogans.

And this is just the OLD testament. How can any Christian stomach the thugs
in the GOP?

4. Huh?
Why is it heretical and blasphemous to criticize the behaviour of a country?

Israelophiles are beginning to sound like "America love it leave it" types.

How neanderthal and narrow minded can some groups be to suggest that any criticism of that group however well founded is somehow blasphemous?

Any time I hear the word anti-semite now, I think of Delay calling protesters of the invasion "unamerican".

This has been pushed to, and waaaay past the limits of reason. It sounds to me like Semites have become Anti-Gentile. Sooo.....that'll be the new cheap shot at those criticising Gentiles. Whoptidoo, now we have a name calling contest. And no reasoned discourse. Is that what this is all about? Diversion from the issues?

6. I think he was joking. Please, take a deep breath and count to ten :--)
I understand where you are coming from. The unbelievable
amount of spin emmanating from the pro- and anti-Zionist
camps makes me stay far, far away.

But it can't keep me from quoting the damn Bible.

3. I was quoting Amos on this forum last year
in reference to fundies who think they're supposed to "help" the end of the world along.

guess I missed my calling... :)

Amos 5, 18

"Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light...

21- "I hate, I despire your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. Though ye offer me burnt offerings, I will not accept them...

5. Right ON!!
I've been posting about these little bits of biblical truths for a while now. It isn't the Jewish people that is being attacked, it is the PRIESTS and the corrupt religionists of that time AND THIS ONE. The message is still as powerful (and spoken by christ himself) today.

It's about RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND THEIR CORRUPTION no matter what the faith. Certainly the Christian fundies aren't gettin this message. It has been my supreme joy to SHOW IT TO THEM at every chance.

Bush and the rw religionists are the anti christ...

9. That's what they WANT you to think!
If Bush is the antichrist, then what comes next...? Hmmmmm? OK, all you Biblical scholars, together: after the antichrist comes Armageddon! Whoopee!

They use the same argument for ME conflict.

I'm sure they're all on tenterhooks waiting for the rapture. I find the whole end-times business creepy in the extreme. Although the idea of post-rapture free stuff could be appealing.
