Did this really happen?
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/08/01/1059480557364.html

Someone told me that there were Iraqi MiG's Buried in the sand in Iraq and I had heard nothing about it and did some research and this was all I could really find. If this was true why didn't the US media report it?

3. Why didn't the US press report it?

Probably because they couldn't spin a couple of rusted out migs buried in a sand dune as being WMD.

6. It did. It didn't last long because every country gets to have planes.
It's a non-story:shrug:

2. True, but why a big deal?
I guess they figured burying them gave them some hope of keeping them. Flying them was suicide. They were hardly a threat to anyone.

4. No, it's not a shock
I just don't recall ever hearing a thing about it. I thought it was false though because * wasn't going around saying crap like if they were hiding planes then they *must* be hiding those wmd's too.

9. Welcome to DU, csw77.
For some reason, I think this goes back to the 1991 war. Iraq lost a lot of planes and with the no fly zone, they probably thought they were best buried in order to hide them from the Brits and the Americans. They're just planes.

5. Yes
The plane was first developed in 1967 and no major update to it since 1991 (At least to those planes). The plane is a high altitude interceptor, mainly used for intercontinental dog fighting. During the First Gulf War the collation quickly attain air superiority and a lot of Iraq’s planes were grounded just so they did not loose any more. Those planes have been under the sand for a long time.

Yup, it's true. As for the rest, the link where I saw that originally reported was from the U.S. media. See http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,93483,00.html

I do not think that one of the reasons Bush gave for the attack on Iraq was their buried figher jet threat, however.

8. Airplanes need parts
How could Mr. Bush Jr. claim to be a pilot if he did not know this? Especially very fast planes!
