Why is Arnold in Cali such a big deal?
What can he do with a Democratic Lt. Governor, a Democratic Attorney General, a Democratic Secretary of State, an overwhelmingly Democratic State House, and an overwhelmingly Democratic State Senate?

1. because the governor does carry some weight
and it will make the dem nominee spend more time and money than they would have otherwise there. The Dem will still win, but Cali is a little more in play now than it was before. This is esp problematic considering Bush's $200 Million war chest and free use of press

10. Yes, California will be looked at more, but it's not a swing state
I predict we'll carry it again, but by 3-4 points less than in 2000. Same with NY because of Giuliani and Koch. But in the end, all of the safe blue states will remain blue. We do have to worry about states like New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

3. "Bully Pulpet"? As in the media has to replay his words.
While it is under no obligation to broadcst his detractor.

And I'm sure a whole host of other administrative issues that the casual observer wouldn't have a clue about. Probably a Veto power too.

7. can't happen
Sec. of State is a Democrat who was elected. And unlike Florida, California isn't a pure toss up state, and thus not as easily stolen.

6. LOL
I'm guessing you're not a Californian.

One thing he can do is raise a whole bunch of money after the election to fund propositions on the ballot, doing an end-run around the state legislature if they don't support his agenda.

And let's see...this one is his baby. What do you think about Prop 57, "The Economic Recovery Bond Act?" A $15 billion bond to get rid of our deficit.

8. We have 54 electoral votes
And Bush wants them, and we know he plays dirty and will do ANYTHING to get them.

Arnie is there to get Bushie our EVs.

And yes, the Enron $$ was a very big damn deal and Arnie already did his higher-ups' bidding on that. One task down, one to go.

9. Why is nobody getting this?
Yes, all those other factors.

But, why is NOBODY mentioning all the cuts to the safety net that he has made, and will continue to make?

Do you not see that is part of the national strategy?

Does it not matter what is happening to people right now because of the cuts, and those to come?

I am very discouraged that there is such a blind eye to this.

Yet, in a few months, there will be a cry about why the poor aren't voting Dem.

11. Like you said, "Why am I in this hand basket?"
You should try living here. The place has became a joke!

Madness on my part, I forgot about, "the land of the fruit and nuts", back in the sixties. And I thought that was just to keep people from coming here!

12. Nobody Cares
about the safety net....

We need those people to vote! The mid/upper class maybe give lip service to the safety net but don't want to pay taxes so they go along with cuts. These "welfare" programs are like the boogyman.

Arnold is a celebrity, an actor. It's all about star power...

13. "We need those people to vote" Oh really..?
Then why is there so little concern for them?

Why are they NOT EVEN PART OF THE EQUATION?

Why is there thread after thread about Ahnold in Cali, and yet never a mention of the cuts he has already made?

Because it simply doesn't matter to 95% of the "progressives" here on DU!

If they don't matter to you, then how in the heck do you expect them to get out and vote??

Can anybody think that through and actually answer that?

Kanary, so sick of this

I only hope some of those lawsuits about his groping might stick, at least so we can get him out somehow and start over again.

19. The way to "fix it"
is for DEms, and especially DUers, to start paying attention to what is happening to poor folks. And that includes those in California.

There have been a few threads about povery, but for the most part, everything else is thought of before poverty issues.

Yet, there always comes those who say "WHy don't the poor vote?"

"We have to register the poor and get them to the polls."

etc etc etc

Unless/until you show that you have GENUINE CONCERN, and are ready willing and able to start making changes in how the poor are treated, to expect them to vote as you think they should is insensitive, uncaring and just plain hypocritical.

The silence is deafening, and the poor folks know that.

THAT's how to "fix it".

21. That's true.
I did a thread on homelessness, it's roots and what could be done to end it. It's languishing on the second page of the Meeting Room. No one really has any interest.

23. That's right... hardly a bit of interest.
Until they want votes.

Poor folks are tired of being used.

So, DU, are you going to start getting interested?

14. Well, I don't want a weiner wager for my Governor.
Here's a new article about him.

<snip>
Arnold Schwarzenegger

A name to be reckoned with
On August 6th, 2003, the audience attending the Tonight Show recieved a direct witnessing of an historic, jaw-dropping occasion: the announcement of candidacy for the California governorship by former bodybuilder and current movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mr. Schwarzenegger ("Arnie" as the media likes to call him) smiled for the camera, waved a massive American flag, and gave what amounted to a full-on political speech, peppering it with catchphrases from his blockbuster hits.

Of course, it would only be fitting that Schwarzenegger throw his Loden Huete into what history will likely call "That Electoral Orgy of Whackjobs and Maniacs". But unlike some of the other quasi-candidates like Gary Coleman and Gallagher, "Ah-nold" has had his eye on political office for a significant period of time.

Born in 1947 in Austria, Arnold was the son of Gustav and Aurelia Schwarzenegger. Gustav was.... well, here we run into a problem. Gustav was a commandant in what most people usually call "The Nazis". But aside from the fact that Arnold could probably track us down and beat the living shit out of us (even in his 60's), it's not exactly clear how much of a "Nazi" Gustav really was. As most people scurrying up the tree to escape Unpleasant Truth will point out, you really couldn't be working in any authoritative capacity in Germany in the 1940's and not be affiliated with the Nazis. Whether Gustav considered his job an opportunity for some world-class oppression or a paycheck to pay for his two boys Arnold and Meinhard is lost to time.

At 15, Arnold was disenchanted by soccer and describes a sense of "power" when looking at bodybuilders, a vision that inspired him to begin weight training. By all accounts (and Jesus Christ, look at him) he took on this task of self-improvement with zeal and consistency, winning awards as "Junior Mister Europe" (which required he go AWOL from his army post to compete) and the non-junior "Mr. Europe." These awards started coming into his resume while he was still in his teens. <snip> more....

To be invited to an affair such as this, Arnold did not speak up about being in politics the day before.
