Teachers Union Boss Sentenced- Art, Jewelry, Furs & Gun Siezed From Home
***BACKGROUND***

WASHINGTON (AP) - The former president of the Washington Teachers' Union was sentenced Friday to more than nine years in prison for a scam in which she embezzled millions of dollars in union dues.

The judge sentenced Barbara A. Bullock, 65, on charges of conspiracy and mail fraud in a case that prosecutors described as "nothing short of brazen greed."

U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon also ordered Bullock upon her release to spend three years in a halfway house and to perform 3,000 hours of community service. She also must repay $4.6 million to the union and turn over luxury items - including artwork, fur coats, and electronics - purchased with the stolen union funds....

4. Reminds me of the "Nature Conservancy" troubles
Why are groups that oppose the regimes goals suddenly under close scrutiny. You think they are more corrupt than any other group currently backed by BushCo?

5. Look for more of these busts to occur.. the snowball effect
Edited on Sat Jan-31-04 09:58 AM by SoCalDem
The investigation was probably underway for a while, and was deserved, but for "maximum" impact, there are probably a lot of these investigations that will suddenly become public..

Perception is reality..

These will be front page stories in the highly republican areas.. It will serve to re-inforce what their "masters" have been telling them all along.. "YOUR union dues are being stolen by union bosses"..therefore ALL unions are bad, and you should be happy to work for peanuts, with no benefits.because you have a better class of people stealing from you...... "republican bidnessmen"

Yep. The story that doesn't get reported is the story of all the "union bosses" that have worked their tails off to get humane working conditions for the union members over these many years and never got a minute of wide recognition. Their names are forgotten, even sometimes by the very people who benefitted from their hard work and dedication.

13. Unions are not corrupt but their leaders can be.
Of course that's no different from any other organization. The sad thing is that rethugs will use this failure of a union leader to demonstrate how "evil" unions are.

15. Any group that gets large like unions can be corrupt
And often is. It becomes more focused on its own power, its own survival and not its original goals.

16. Organizations cannot be corrupt- they are not real entities.
The leaders in the organization can be corrupt- regardless of the size of the organization.

14. so you don't like corporations because of Ken Lay?
I remember saying that unions are some of the least corrupt institutions in America. And look here - a story that gets so much attention because it's so rare. If this was another story about CEOs, we'd hardly notice since there are so many.

In any case, glad to hear that a crook ripping off the union was caught.

"I was told that they are never corrupt..."

Really? Link?
