All you straights..Got a log in your eye?
Evidently, *43 is trying to make some kind of biblical point, but has no idea what he's talking about...

6. Are you ready for this?
The actual quote is...

"Thou hypocrite, first cast out the BEAM out of thine own eye; and then shall thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.'

Matthew 7:5

I gather he thought a 'beam' was like a ceiling beam...and made that into a more folksy 'log'.

8. Wrong kind of beam
Beam of light.

A ray or shaft of light.
A concentrated stream of particles or a similar propagation of waves: a beam of protons; a beam of light.

Mote

A very small particle; a speck: “Dust motes hung in a slant of sunlight”

15. sorry but I think you are wrong
As your post points out the spelling is the same and since the second thing is an actually physical thing in ones eye the first thing should be too. I don't relish defending Bush but here he is sort of right. I never have seen his actual words used but I have seen beam and splinter used. He also is using it to make the correct point about judging people. This is not one of his dumb quotes.

16. We disagree then
You can have a beam of light in your eyes, and specks of dust in your eyes.

You can't have wooden beams or logs in your eyes.

No wonder he confused people.

25. Mote v. Beam
A mote is a speck of dust. It doesn't make sense for the beam to be light. The comparison doesn't hold. Mote is solid, ergo beam is solid, ergo beam refers to a roof beam or something like that.

It doesn't make any sense for a beam in your eye to be a roof beam!

And as you can see, when Bush translated it into log, everyone got confused.

But, whatever you were taught, unless you want to check the original language.

After all, it's your president, and no doubt has to be an American translation.

52. Yep, but (casting my mind back to school-days) ...
... the metaphor was (usually) very relevant to the audience,
that's how the message could be put across.

IIRC, the Eye of a Needle was the narrow, dark arch of a gateway
(typically drawn as a minaret or similar) ... it was not always
easy to make a camel (or horse or donkey) go from the bright daylight
into this unknown passageway where unseen hazards may lurk - it wasn't
wide enough to turn the animal round if it got skittish (and you don't
want to be behind a frightened camel ...)

32. Take a Look at These Popular Translations
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 04:52 AM by REP
This is one of the better-known bible quotes, and to say it means "rays of light" is, well, silly. The literal meaning is before you talk about someone's minor fault, take a look at your own large fault.

A quick comparison of different translations of the bible shows this quite clearly:

"You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." The New American Standard Bible

"hypocrita eice primum trabem de oculo tuo et tunc videbis eicere festucam de oculo fratris tui" The Latin Vulgate (trabem = tree trunk; log, club, spear; beam, timber, rafter; ship, vessel; roof, house)

"Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." The Holman Christian Standard Bible

A reading of Matthew 7:1-5 also makes it clear that it is not "rays of light" being discussed:

"1 Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." King James Version

11. Nobody's Perfect, Says Bush
Bush is taking himself very seriously. He must have feeling kindly disposed towards gays when he told Americans not to judge them. "We are all sinners," said Bush.

A lot of gays are beach town fascists, as far to the right as possible. I wonder how they're receiving the news that Rev. George is telling the flock to pray for homosexuals, shoplifters, alcoholics, wifebeaters and assorted other degenerates. Do not speak unkindly of homosexuals ... instead, shun them. On the Day of Judgment, the Lord will cast them into the darkness ...

22. appeal to moderates
By not judging gays he wants those people to say that Bush maybe against gay marriage but he isn't a hater. He knows he is about maxed out on gay support but he has to keep the moderate vote happy. In short he wants his cake (the Religious Right) and to eat it too (the moderate vote).

he can't run on his success abroad becuase he hasn't had any yet (unless you count the ability to bomb to hell two nearly broken down countries already near the stone age to begin with)

and he can't run on his success at home becuase too many people have finally begun to notice that the economic recovery he promised doesn't seem to include them or anybody they know.

So all he has left to run on is the bigotry of his own base. sad to say, few things motivate like hate.

48. I object to being labeled a sinner by the likes of him.
People who say we are all sinners are being very presumptuous, since "Sin" is only a construct of their own superstitious delusions.

I have probably done a few things I would consider unethical or immoral, but I learned from them, and am a better person for it. I don't accept the notion that I must be tainted for life by a mere mistake.

Besides, his calling all of us sinners is really the pot calling the kettle black. The only gays who are near as "sinful" as Dumbya are Sully and the Log Cabiners.
