Whatever happened to former Senator Edward Brooke?

I always wondered whatever happened to him. He was one of the last of the halfway decent Republicans left in government until the neo-cons and right-wing religious nutcases took over the GOP. I know he left politics a while ago. Is he even still alive?

please check me if that's wrong, but I'm almost sure I read about it in the papers, although I can't remember when . . . it was some time ago, though . . .

on edit: if the above post is correct, I do apologize to Senator Brooke and wish him well . . . maybe what I recall reading about was his illness . . . again, my apologies . . .
