Did anyone else see Bush's guy on The Daily Show last night?
Next up, Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia. What a scary group of people that are in charge of our country. America is in bad shape in every direction under a new Bush term.

1. The audience was almost deathly silent IMO
Stewart got his points across in a humorous way but they were nontheless stinging. Pearle is frightening.

39. Jon Stewart: "Isn't Qadaffi Like, The Mr. T of Terrorism?"
OMG....they are using QADAFFI who has been to ass-kiss his way into the West's good graces since the Clinton era, as proof that the Iraq debacle is "WORKING..." SICK PUPPY!

2. That Perle was on TDS says a lot
...about the perceived importance of that show in opinion making. On the other hand, part of me wishes Stewart had refused to grant the bastid a venue for reaching his audience....

8. An evil thing must first be exposed before it can be eliminated.
I do not believe that Perle can persuade any decent person to agree with him. Exposure weakens support for the PNAC vision of the world. Stewart did the right thing.

3. Stewart didn't challenge him when he said twice
that Iraq harbored terrorists - as a justification for war.

Other than that, Stewart did OK, but he let Perle get those lies in.

and he probably also realizes there isn't a point in arguing with a scary idealogue.

7. Jon Stewart is a comic not a journalist
I know he does a better job than most professinal journalists but...
He hosts a "fake news show" on Comedy Central his job is to be funny not a hard hitting interviewer

27. Um, actually that's correct though
Iraq did harbor terrorists. I believe hezbollah had a recognized presence there.

The implication that al Qaeda was there and in any significant relation with Saddam's regime is a separate question, the answer to which is apparently "No."

I saw it was Perle, and was curious at first. As soon as I began hearing the propaganda and AWOL ass-kissing, I just couldn't stay.

Sorry Jon. Love your show, but giving time to this corrupt administration will not atract me to watch your show.

6. "know your enemy"
For people unfamiliar with the PNAC it's good to hear it straight from the Fascist's mouth. Also Stewart can claim to be "unbiased" (not that anyone would believe it - conservatives seem to think that being neutral and objective is "liberal bias"). I wish Stewart had challenged him though.

17. Jon is courageous
he was one of the only to stand up to Bush when everyone was licking his ass crack.

Pearle looked like a fool. Jon was brilliant in exposing the neo bullshit without being confrontation.

Jon did the right thing. Let's support him, unless you want Leno all the time.

i thought jon got some good digs in at him. i doubt pearle is going to pick up any followers on that show. it just highlighted how scary those people are.

Iraq was supposed to be an example for the rest of the world? SICKENING. lets knock out the little guy and kill hundreds of innocent people just to set an example for the big players -iran, syria, saudi arabia.

37. Too bad, you missed one of Jon Stewart's more brilliant interviews
I had some misgivings as well, but came away completely satisfied.

Jon knew the background material, and got Perle to talk about the substance of his policies without tossing him softballs. Jon didn't delve quite as deeply as he might have, given a longer show, but for a 5-minute interview segment that was one of the best I've ever seen.

10. Jon got him to not only admit but brag about Iraq being an example
Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 10:57 AM by Bandit
Jon asked him if really the real reason for invading Iraq was to teach the world a lesson and Perle said yes most definitely and was very pleased with himself. He said it really didn't matter one whit whether they had weapons or not. Our main purpose was to intimidate the other countries in the world and used Libya as an example of a success of that mission. He is one sick puke.

When Stewart said, "But isn't Colonel Quaddafi the Mr. Tee of the Mideast?" LOL!

I, too, noted the silence in the audience. I'm really glad I didn't miss this part of The Daily Show. It was excellent!

15. I thought it was verrry scarry
Perle comes across as a nice guy given the chance, when he is one of the most dangerous hawks behind this Administration. He is one of the best spoken advocates for PNAC.

Now David "Axis of Evil" Frumm wrote a book for the guy? What's up with that? Why does the world all of a sudden need to know who Richard Perle is?

16. I wish I'd caught it
Perle is a great example of the thinking in this administration. He was on Hardball a few weeks ago. He actually said something to the effect that the United States is using a big stick as foreign policy. Matthews came back with a question about the carrot, and Perle said that the big stick is the carrot.

Niiiice.

a couple of good zingers in, as noted.
I'm sick of this "what's the difference" attitude from this misadministration...bet it makes a difference to the families of 500 plus of our troops who have lost their lives, and to the troops who have been injured...

19. I was amazed at...
How much information he was willing to give up. He admitted that Iraq was just and "example". He admitted that there is a bucket full of countries left on their list.

I would have like to see Jon juxtapose the Middle East agenda with North Korea. Aside from that I thought it was a good interview. Jon made him look like a ghoul.

25. After watching Frontline with David Kay and now Perle on the Daily Show
I understand why the neo-cons believe they are in the right. They make a strange and sometimes convincing argument. It's always important to see the other side in debate, right? Their logic gets frayed around the edges, though, when the facts point to money changing hands, their seemingly insatiable need for power and the psychology behind religious fundamentalism. Indeed, Perle was twitching with a bizarre kind of geek boy affect...the way he laughed at Stewart's jokes was unsettling -- trying too hard to be hip -- obviously he doesn't belong. And the dead giveaway for any outsider on the Daily Show is when the guest stands up immediately after the interview and wants to bolt before the show cuts to commercial. All the cool people stay put and chat...

28. Cool--applying the "hipness" hermeneutic
I bet Perle went away congratulating himself for reaching out to The Young People and showing it can be "groovy" to be an imperialist goon--absolutely unaware of the subtle cues of discomfort and misplacement he was shedding the whole time. Nicely analyzed.

And b.t.w., in case no one has said it yet, welcome to DU. :toast:

32. did Perle know about the death of that Canadian soldier ...
... when he made that wisecrack about how "Canada will show up to help after it's over"?

There was a running "attack Canada" gag going through the interview, but I thought Perle's remark was a bit over the top.

I know the show is taped earlier, but I'm certain that the news about the suicide bomber attack in Kabul was broadcast in the morning ... and that Perle might have known.

Just before the Daily Show, I'd been watching the parents of the soldier being interviewed on CBC. He was scheduled to come home next week. Little did they realize he'd become a casualty of one of Perle's messes!
