BBV: Ohio counties using DREs in 2004 GE (official list from SoS)
I do not know if this info is already available - if it is, my apologies for repetition.

I wrote to J. Kenneth Blackwell, Ohio Secretary of State, a couple of months ago to request a listing of which counties in Ohio would be using DRE machines. Since Diebold's CEO has promised to deliver the state's electoral votes for Bush in this year's election, I felt it wise to find out how widespread the use of DRE machines would be.

Here is the reply I just received yesterday:

Dear Matthew:

You inquired as to where touch screen voting machines will be used in 2004.
The following counties have all expressed an interest in implementing DRE
voting equipment in 2004. No decisions have been made as to whether the new
voting equipment will be implemented this year. We are working to ensure
that all potential risks identified have been mitigated. Also bear in mind
that not all DRE equipment are touch-screen.

Adams, ES&S
Auglaize, ES&S
Brown, Diebold
Carroll, Diebold
Columbiana, Diebold
Crawford, Diebold
Darke, Sequoia
Delaware, ES&S
Gallia, Diebold
Hardin, Diebold
Henry, Diebold
Jackson, Diebold
Jefferson, Diebold
Logan, Diebold
Lorain, Diebold
Madison, Maximus/Hart
Medina, Diebold
Mercer, Diebold
Morgan, Diebold
Paulding, ES&S
Portage, Maximus/Hart
Putnam, ES&S
Richland, Diebold
Trumbull, Diebold
Tuscarawas, Diebold
Williams, Maximus/Hart

Sincerely,

Andy Shifflette

1. That letter doesn't sound like it's a done deal...
and if I'm not reading something into the words that isn't really there, it seems as if Andy Shifflette isn't that enamored with the Diebold machines.

Do you know anything about his position?

3. Thanks for posting
Ohio has 66 counties earmarked for new machines, so this list is not all of them. Four counties have refused to pick a vendor.
It will be a done deal just as soon as Blackwell can figure out how to convince the local boards that these machines are now all safe, secure and just hunky-dorry.

4. Shall we post that?
Zhade - I could put that on our OH state status page http://www.verifiedvoting.org/stateview.asp?state=OH

It would help if you or Shirlden would let us know when more info arrives.

That cool?

5. Marketplace (NPR) just did a bit on
computer voting machines. It could be a good resource to use.
