An issue was raised in one of the threads yesterday that needs some
debate. The issue is the re-writing of our school's text books by right-wing groups. In my home town there is such a group and they have been granted permission to re-do the text books so that our students will be able to pass their test and get promoted. We have been having a problem it seems in that less than half of our seniors can pass their "No Child Left Behind" tests. This group figures that the way to solve the problem is to change the texts. How much of this is going on across the nation and what can we do about it? This is one of the scariest things going on today. It scares me far more than any terrorist could do. If you control the minds of the children you control the world. That is what they are after. Control. They aren't interested in truth just control and it is as scary as Hitler was. This issue needs some attention.

2. When I was in Catholic school, our history text books
were very biased and didn't give the events that occurred accurately. One of the parents, a history teacher at the community college, raised a stink with the school board about it and managed to get the textbook changed to the one being used in the public schools.

Maybe some action by parents might be worth the effort.

7. School textbook content has always been dominated by two markets
The two largest school systems are Texas and California. Almost all major publishers have to meet whatever demands those two states place on them. There has been a concerted effort by rightwing fundies to dominate the textbook evaluation committees in those states, particularly Texas. This has resulted in the downplaying of evolution and also of anything that reflects poorly on US policy or free-market capitalism. History textbooks with no mention of the Great Depression, for instance.

Sounds to me like you're in a local eddy of this same broad shitstorm.
