3. I know.
It's just that invading Canada for the purpose would be even more ridiculous. :)

7. Other - By Disallowing Religious Definition

I say use their argument against them. If Marriage is a Sacrament then either (a) married couples should have no legally protected rights whatsoever or (b) couples married by any recognized religion should have the same legally protected rights. If married couples wnat to give up their rights, fine. If they want to choose the second option, I believe certain Methodist priests have been performing same-gender marriages.

Wouldn't passing a constitutional amendment defining marriage for the stated purpose of protecting the sanctity of marriage mean the government would be dictating religious doctrine? Have conservatives now gone from arguing that the 1st Amendment protects religion from government not government from religion to arguing that ... well, I guess that the religious clause of the 1st amendment does not exist and was probably planted in the printed texts we see by agents of Oceania.

11. LOL BINGO! There you go!

A secular state cannot by definition, uphold the "sanctity" of anything.

Sacraments, sanctity, assigning sacredness to anything is a function of religious institutions.

18. They Want to Protect Marriage by Banning Marriage
or rather one type of marriage.

It's more akin to trying to stop an artery from bleeding by cutting open another artery.

It's doing the exact opposite of what they are saying they want to do. They want MORE people to get married and stay married and yet, to do this, they want to PREVENT some people from getting married.

The logic of the wingnuts is remarkably consitent on one point: The conclusions always contradict their premises.

The key to defeating this proposal, I think, will be to expose the hidden assumptions that lead people to accept such obvious fallacies. The worst strategy is to let things remain unsaid. The political difficulty of reasoning with the electorate about emotional topics cannot be accepted as an excuse for timidity in the face of brutal assaults on our humanity.

The freedom to love is essential to who we are. That's ground that can never belong to the right wing, or any totalitarian impulse. Let the enemies of liberty realize the futility of the effort, and see if they don't back down.
