Japanese mobile phone giant NTT DoCoMo has come up with a wearable mobile phone that gives a whole new meaning to the term "handset".
The Finger Whisper phone, currently being developed by the company's media computing laboratory, would convert voice sound into vibrations that travel through the bones of the user's hand.

According to a report in New Scientist magazine, the phone would be based in a wristband. A vibration would serve in place of a ringtone, then a simple touch of finger to thumb would answer the call. Sound would travel from the wristband, through the hand and into a finger placed in the ear. Users would speak into a microphone on the wristband.

Another touch of finger to thumb would end the call. To make a call, users would simply speak the number into the wristband, which would function using voice recognition technology.

The company has not given a date for when the device might go on sale, but an earlier report in Wired suggested 2005 was the target.

2. And I though this was another thread
ridiculing concerns over Kerry's Skull and Bones membership as being about "just a college fraternity."

3. Boneophone
The technology has been obsolete for more than a decade. It was a light thing that draped over your shoulders and played music into your colarbones, and sounded like a stereo, but didn't bother anyone else around you.

A friend of mine at work had one years ago. It gave him something to listen to when he was walking around railroad yards at night.

The walkman killed it off.:tinfoilhat:

5. I remember a BonePhone AM/FM radio in the late 1970s or...
early 1980s. You draped it over your shoulders and the speakers were placed in contact with your collar bones. The sound conducted through your collar bones right up into your skull via the rib cage.

I don't think it worked quite as well as advertised. We did have one kid at my high school who wore one around constantly. He bought it from an ad in OMNI magazine, and as I recall, he paid like 50 bucks for it, which was a lot of money in 1981.

6. Don't laugh
This might be something for those who have nerve deafness which is sensorinueral hearing loss. I have it and can't hear the damn phone ring. It's a deafness of certain tones. Along with phones I can't hear car horns or sirens. (ack)

I'd love to have a vibrating wrist

7. I would find it hard to believe that it works
I wear a bone conduction type hearing aid. I have tried it with the finger, the elbow, the wrist, the shoulder and it does not work. At the top of the neck it works.

8. I can't wait to see people walking around...
...with their fingers in their ears, chattering like crazy. (You do that today, you'll get locked up for your own safety.)
Sound would travel from the wristband, through the hand and into a finger placed in the ear.

10. Just thinking about that
gives me a headache. I'm sure it's probably no worse than the noises that make our bones vibrate all the time, but still.
