Calling all Canadians, question regarding your Public Schools...
*I've heard that Canadian public schools allow corporal punishment. Is this so?

Also, I've considered a move to Winnipeg, but saw a notice on the net that kids were being *attacked* in school, so schools should be more careful about locking doors etc... Any idea what they meant by attacked? :scared:

Thanks. :hi:

1. I heard about a Canadian kid that got robbed
His assailant was armed with a knife carved out of a walrus tusk, and he took the guys entire bag of moose jerkey.
(sorry, I had to do it)

2. Knock it off EY?
I am actually considering a move if * is selected again, and want to know if my child will be slapped around by teachers and or *attacked* :P

I tend to think of Canada as a Xanadu of sorts, so this was alarming to lil ol mua'

4. last violent incident covered by Canadian press ...
Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 11:56 PM by Lisa
... involved kids in Vancouver. And actually it happened out of school. As did the Reena Virk incident in Victoria. I haven't heard of violence being a particular problem in Winnipeg ... Canadians tend to worry about school bullying etc. just as Americans do, but we haven't seen as many school shootings as the States.

Re: corporal punishment, although I grew up in a jurisdiction which in theory allowed it, I don't recall hearing of it being used during the time I was in school (1970s-mid 1980s). And stuff like that would get talked about, for sure! My dad was a teacher and was against it.

Some of the Manitoba school boards have reportedly banned it. I guess you'd have to look at the specific school district for further info.

5. Thanks so much guys! Can you tell me where in Winnipeg
the best schools exist? I love what I've learned about Winnipeg so far.

I live in a great town now in the US. It's historic has a great sense of community and has great schools. I'm looking to find that in a place where Bush doesn't rule :P

Any info you have would be great.

6. last time I was in the 'Peg ...
It was February, and as I walked down the street, practically every person who passed by either smiled or reminded me to keep bundled up, to avoid getting chilled! I don't know enough about the town to advise on where the finest schools are (though any city with TWO universities, which is something that one generally associates with much larger cities, is likely education-oriented). But I can vouch for the "history" and "community" part, for sure.

I live in Winterpeg, Manisnowba currently.

Still miss my hometown. I gotta say, if your kids are in 8th grade or lower, and you don't mind being like 150 miles from the nearest major center, I suggest Benito. Tiny little town of 500 or so.

Anyway, if the principal has stayed on in the six or seven years since I move on to high school, it should still be a great school.

Kevin Kirkpatrick is one of the best educators I've ever known.

10. nope
Education is provincial jurisdiction, unfortunatly. You won't find corporal punishment in any school in this civilized nation.
As for Winnipeg, worry more about the horrible climate and bumpy (thunk, thunk, thunk) roads.

11. Winnipeg...
Never been there, but it's a very progressive town (it was a hot spot for leftist activity during the early days of the CCF/NDP and continues to elect New Democrats on a regular basis), and apparently, other people in this thread seem to think it's a friendly place. :-P
