Question about the draft
Hi,
Does anyone know if openly gay people are still requierd to register at 18? After looking through the SSS website that was posted a few hours ago - http://www.sss.gov/Sitemap.htm , the question came up in my mind.

It would seem contradictory to the don't ask, don't tell policy? Yet they don't mention it on their website.

"You can't be in the military unless we need you to fight for us"

Anyone know?

1. Hi, and welcome to DU!
Yep, everyone's got to register. The draft board will make a decision later, and theoretically will declare openly gay men as ineligible for service, if necessary.

I agree, it's stupid.

2. Yes all 18 year olds are required to register
by the way, the don't ask, don't tell will only come into play
after induction... NOT BEFORE... and that is if just like the drug
policy they just don't decide to sideline it

6. Don't ask, don't tell. They want all to register.
What we really need is widespread resistance to registering. But as to what the law says, all must register. If a kid said he wasn't registering because he was gay -- that would be telling. ;-) They want your bods, and don't want minds to come with them, anyway.

8. If you do not register, you will be in "Hurtville" for the rest of your li
Any government connected job or loan will be unavailable..College loans included..

Rebelling is fine, but be careful.. Registering does not mean you are going in..

If soomeone is gay and does not pplan on going into the military, I would suggest documenting that fact before registration.. Perhaps membership in GLB organizations, or even as mundane as having your family doctor notate it somewhere in your medical files.. (If you are comfortable with that)..

It would be patently unfair to induct someone who was decent enough to tell them in advance that they were gay...especially since the final result would be their dismissal from the service.. I would think that they would he glad to know before they spent money on training someone
