Politics Aside, Carters Speech Was Huge Today.
Edited on Sun Jan-18-04 11:57 PM by jayfish
Transcript

-SNIP-

I spent a lot of time, in the last year and a half, strongly opposing the completely unnecessary and unjust war in Iraq.

(APPLAUSE)

And despite my strongest effort, the war has commenced, and now has proven to be not only based on erroneous information and misleading statements, but also a sustained demonstration of tragedy.

Yesterday three American soldiers were killed. This morning 22 more people were killed, two of them Americans. We've had 500 Americans killed in this war, 3,000 other Americans injured, some extremely seriously. And no telling what's going to happen in the future.

-SNIP-

That is a direct repudiation of a sitting President by a former President. I just watched it and my jaw, just about, hit the floor. Has this been brought up anywhere else today or has it been "overlooked". I don't think it's unprecedented but it is rather rare.

Jay

2. The more I admire Carter the less I can respect Clinton
Clearly Carter does not believe in the no criticism of a standing President rule. Does it only apply to the previous holder of the office.

4. I Don't Think It Only Applies To...
the previous office holder. Otherwise we would have had Ford harping all over the place about how evil Clinton was. And you know that if the Pubs. could have had him doing that then he would have been.

7. Ford was a placeholder
He was a moderate (all the better to make it through Senate confirmation), and he most definitely did NOT drink the neocon Kool-Aid. He is a Republican of the old-school, the kind I thought prevailed in the party back when I was still a proud member. I don't think he had an opinion one way or another on Clinton.

8. I Agree On Your Profile Of Ford. My Point Is...
that if the Pug. party machinery could have had him out hitting the Clinton's, they would have had him out there hitting the Clinton's. It's just not something that is done by former Presidents without a damn good reason.

3. thanks for the link!
I haven't heard about this anywhere else today, although there was some talk about it toward the end of last week.

Unfortunately, the right has been running a smear campaign against Carter for some time now, as though his words carry less importance than those of other former Presidents. But I bet most people still respect him. His words should help our cause.

Good stuff to hear!

5. Your Welcome. Ya Know, Every Time They Criticize Him For...
building homes for the poor as if it's some kind of "bleeding heart, wacko fringe" thing, I lose a little more faith in humanity. Here is a man who practices what he preaches. He does the things that the right only proselytizes to the rest of us and he does it with real faith and conviction. What does he get for this? Shit on by the right at every opportunity. It really sucks.

9. They can't stand the fact that he's a conservative Christian AND
a social and political liberal. They've convinced themselves that those things are incompatible. President Carter is just the greatest. And I have to give props to Rosalyn; what a beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, classy woman!

6. Deflect the polemical attacks against Carter ...
And defend him publically and LOUDLY ...
