Private equity firm the Carlyle Group said on Monday that it will set up an office in Mexico and has made a number of new hires to start its business there.

Luis Tellez, who joins Carlyle from Mexican conglomerate Desc, and Joaquin Avila, a managing director at Lehman Brothers (LEH), will join the firm as Managing Directors to co-lead its first buyout investment activities in Mexico.

David M. Rubenstein, Carlyle co-founder and managing director, described Mexico as a "fertile terrain for private equity investing."
