Turning Muslim in Texas
uh oh...the freepers might be converting en mass to embrace Islam soon

http://www.channel4.com/culture/microsites/B/believeitornot/texas1.html

George W Bush may be backed by Christian fundamentalists but in his home state of Texas, Islam is the latest big draw. The Bible belt is transferring its allegiance to the Qur’an because, for many erstwhile Christians, believe it or not, the church is too liberal.

Eric was a Baptist preacher before he became a Muslim 14 years ago. Now he prays five times a day – even in the middle of watching a football game. His wife, Karen, also a convert, is covered from head to toe in the traditional Muslim burka. Islam, says Eric, ‘is everything I wanted Christianity to be’. His mother has found it hard to come to terms with her son’s conversion and believes he will return to the Christian faith: ‘Then he will be a dynamic preacher.’ Eric says: ‘Maybe some day she’ll embrace Islam.’...

2. 400,000 muslims in Texas, I don't think so
The 400,000 number seems to be a gross exaggeration of the muslim population in Texas. The muslim population in the Lone Star State was estimated in 1990 to be between 35,000 and 140,000.

3. I knew the liberals were destroying the Baptist church!
You can tell every time one of them says you're supposed to hate the sin, but love the sinner. Whatever happened to stoning? Them Baptists better start showing some wrath of God real quick or downtown Tyler is gonna start looking a lot like Teheran!:silly:

4. It doesn't say much
for the quality of his faith if he really changed religions just because his previous one was "too liberal." Did the reporter just not want to talk about the theological issues involved? Was he/she trying on purpose to make Muslim converts look shallow? It's just really hard to get anything substantial out of that news report.

6. Luckily, freedom of religion is still allowed here
but if Karen had read the Qu'ran, she'd know she's to dress modestly but not draw attention to oneself. A burka draws attention.
BTW, anyone in Texas-there are Sufis hanging out in the Lone Star State, wearing regular clothes, treating men and women equally, and doing the Dances of Universal Peace-just in case someone has the notion that all Muslims are alike.

8. Alhamdulilah!
I myself wouldn't say that Christianity as practiced by the majority in the states is too liberal... Indeed, Jesus taught a very "liberal" agenda, complete with social responsibility and communal property rights. What, in my opinion, American Christianity has become is too commercial and material.

There are many Christans that have converted just for the above reasons. They see the the similarity of Islam with Christianity, free of many of the western trappings of commercialism.

9. That's beyond bizarre..

I'm a committed Christian, and I find it bizarre that Eric calls Islam everything he hoped Christianity would be. Where did he get the idea that Christianity is too liberal? I don't know what to make of this...

10. It's the OT thing
Lots of latter day fundies lean heavily towards the Old Testament to start with. It's the only way they can reconcile their unchristian neocon political and social beliefs. Old Testament Judaism is kissin' cousin to Islam: holy wars, laws and commands, asceticism, female subjugation, angry aotocratic tribal god and all.
