Here's the result, from Al Kamen's column in today's Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A1775-2004Jan8.html

Fourth item: "Former Bush Aide Eyed for Baghdad"

Chatter at the Pentagon is that the new inspector general for L. Paul Bremer's Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad is to be named shortly. The leading contender on the short list appears to be Washington lawyer Stuart W. Bowen Jr., former Bush White House deputy staff secretary. Before that, Bowen was in the White House counsel's office, a key player of the Florida recount group and earlier worked for then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush in several legal jobs.

Unlike other IGs, this job, created by Congress in November, does not require Senate confirmation.

No regrets.

in charge of investigating military, criminal, ethicial, procedural, or other, events in Iraq.

Specifically relating to Bremer.

Remember that Bremer's got 10's of billions of dollars to play with. Guess who the Congressionally appointed watchdog is?

The new IG.

Who's the IG?

One of Bush's tapeworm buddies.

Let the looting commence!

5. don't bow...
Would you have done the same? I know I've done the right thing but there's a tiny little nagging voice back there in my head.... Maybe it's :tinfoilhat: paranoia that the black helicopters are coming to my house, or maybe it's fear that the journalist's creed is crap.

8. VBG. I think I've seen that paraphrased as
"I wouldn't be paranoid if they weren't after me." :D

9. Despite your swipe about my "superior friend-choosing skills"
I commend you for doing what your conscience bids. And that, precisely, is why it seems so implausible that someone like you can look at a situation and know it is inherently wrong, while your friend is immersed up to the eyebrows in it and yet you maintain your friendship.

Some people have a price; others don't. It's nice to know you fall into the latter camp.

10. It was a cheap shot and I apologize.
Thanks for your comment. Y'know, I've only told one other person about this (besides the reporter) -- my better half. It's been hard not to brag about it, and if it goes anywhere else, it's going to be harder still. OTOH, until he goes to Baghdad, I could run into him at work any time. I have to look him in the eye and know that because I did the right thing I may have harmed his career. I appreciate the praise but I'm not sure it's deserved.
