2. This seems to be to be a good thing
You can vote 'no' on the recall, but in the event it goes through, you have a choice of who you'd want for governor. It's as if you're picking a second choice. With the original way, CA would leave the decision in the hands of those want the recall (i.e. freeper-types.) This is more democratic.

4. California puts too many things to referendum.
Its a political cop out, and also a self-perpetuation industry.

I used to live in Sacramento, and it was interesting to watch how these progressive era reforms where hijacked.

There are actually consulting firms that specialize in running referendums and hire paid staff to collect signatures to put things on the ballot. The image of referendum as big grass roots campaigns is quite often false, and the volunteer who is aksing for your signature is often not a volunteer at all.

Also, the state legislature sort of cops out too on tough issues by letting them go to referendum.

I recall those ballot booklets that would come in the mail...page after page of discussion of the "propositions", pro, con, independent assesment, rebutttals....I used to think to myself "Why isnt this being debated in the legislature or being worked out in committee?".

California does have some serious political problems...systemic problems.

it's been written about several times about how it's not democratic as well.
no real information for the public to digest -- just soundbite phrases.

6. It means the recall doesn't really matter - just replace the bum
The democratic result of this fiasco is that if 49% of Californians want Davis - too bad for them, cuz 18% wingnuts will get Ahnuld (or the guy who dropped out of college). The judge just wanted to make sure that democracy ( people incensed at this whole thing) is not an issue and people not crazy about Davis prevail against people not quite getting what Democracy is.
