It's beginning to look like Vietnam

The drumbeat began within a few months after statues of Saddam Hussein toppled. President Bush and his neocon clique had gotten the United States into a Vietnam-like quagmire. Many of us wrote that the differences between Iraq and Vietnam were vast. Besides, had not the same critics trotted out the ''Q'' word within weeks of the invasion of Afghanistan?

Nearly two years into the war, as the Iraqi elections approach, some unsettling parallels to Vietnam have surfaced. As one who abandoned the hapless South Vietnamese on April 30, 1975, in a helicopter from the U.S. Embassy roof, I have pondered the strategic misjudgments that led to that betrayal for 30 years.

Where was this point of view two months ago, before the election?

It was all about "making progress" and "hard work" before.

Granted, I'm glad to see some reality making the press, but it's a little late.

Where was this point of view?

The members of the media who enabled this war, and who continued to enable Bush and his cronies are guilty. It is a little to late to say, "Whoops! We should have been a little more critically aware."

This author admits that he was one who poo-pooed the comparisons to Vietnam, but now thinks differently. Too late for retroactive analysis.

6. Here's the good news

The world did not end on November 2. In the next four years I can see the American public choking on a steady diet of neocon nonsense and totally rejecting the man and the party.
