The Port Authority Transcripts
On Thurday, the Port Authority at last released hundreds of pages of transcripts of
telephone conversations and radio transmissions recorded on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.
It takes only a few pages of reading to rekindle the intensity of those hours just
after the first plane struck the north tower of the WTC. In a real sense,
these transcripts and the recordings on which they are based are forensic documents. They
help piece together a clearer picture of how Port Authority employees responded to the
almost impossible crisis of that moring. The mistakes that were made --were more than
counterbalanced by genuinely heroic efforts to free others trapped in burning offices or disabled elevators.

1. Ed, I did no heroic deed, I was a laborer — John
SGT. JOHN MARIANO

"I responded to the W.T.C. Command Post on Sept. 11 along with Police Officer Jeff Haner at approximately 11:45 with supplies — gloves, masks, flashlight. Upon delivering items to the command post, we proceeded to the disaster site and assisted other agencies with debris removal.

(A handwritten postscript is added, addressed to Lt. Edward Gulch: "Ed, I did no heroic deed, I was a laborer — John")

Hero enough, John Mariano. We're all laborers...

not an inspired or better yet a shocked person.

.........and junior is president and never held a job in his life. A sliver spoon had been injected in his ass at birth.

4. Not LBN.... moving to Editorials and Other Articles
This article appears on the New York Times' Op/Ed page, and is better suited for the Editorials forum.

Thanks!
