State Sen. Charlie Dent has made an issue out of opponent Joe Driscoll's out-of-town pedigree and money from New York, Boston and Philadelphia that has poured into his campaign, but Dent has raked in his own share of outsider money in what has grown into a $3.7 million contest for the Lehigh Valley's congressional seat.
Dent has been a beneficiary of a $5 million national joint Republican campaign fund that has received contributions from more than 250 donors scattered across 26 states, the District of Columbia and three European countries, according to Federal Election Commission records.
Dent, a 14-year state legislator from Allentown, has accepted $170,000 from the fund, which has also provided campaign contributions to at least 14 other Republican candidates in districts flung across 10 states, including Louisiana, Washington and Colorado.

Contributors to the fund include George Argyros, the U.S. Ambassador to Spain; Tom Benson, the owner of the New Orleans Saints; Drayton McLane Jr., the owner of the Houston Astros; and Stephen Lessing, the managing director of Lehman Brothers, a New York investment firm started by relatives of Driscoll's wife, Alexandra.
