It is the first time in our collective memory that the Citizen won't make a presidential endorsement. We have, however, made endorsements this election season in numerous state and local races, having held nearly 40 meetings in the past three months with candidates to question them about their backgrounds and the issues.
Our decision not to endorse for president was not unanimous. Two of three Editorial Board members agreed; the third wanted the Citizen to take a position.

The arguments on the side of making an endorsement included that it is longstanding tradition, that it is part of our community leadership role and that we ought to be upfront about where we stand.
Ah, that last part is the rub, at least for me. Here's where I stand, 10 days before the election: undecided. It's the same place I stood four years ago, and it continued until the morning of the election, when I had to make a choice. So, if I can't decide yet, how on earth can I pretend to lend an opinion to others?
