Still making a difference

The first time Watertown Citizens for Environmental Safety, a newly formed group of mainly mothers, met with Army officials about the decommissioned nuclear reactor at the Arsenal site, one of the men said, "You guys aren't really housewives, are you?" <snip>

And 25 years later, after the worried-moms-in-small-living-rooms beginnings of the organization, the group has become one that has served the public and has been involved with several noteworthy local, national and international programs. <snip>

Formed in 1979, in response to the Three-Mile Island nuclear accident, the group has taken turns through Watertown and world politics and history to become the active group it still remains today. <snip>

Groups that have sprung from WCES include the Watertown Environment and Energy Efficiency Committee, the Watertown Bicycle Committee, the Sister City Project and the recycling center. The group has also grown internally and has established groups that are very concerned about pesticide use, as well as the Justice with Peace Task Force, which works for social justice issues. <snip>
