Police Chief Tom Manger holds an M-16 assault rifle - with Bin Laden
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 11:21 AM by dArKeR
Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger holds an M-16 assault rifle with a 30 round capacity clip during a press conference asking that U.S. President George W. Bush (news - web sites) renew the Assault Weapons Ban September 13, 2004 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. The 1994 ban, signed by former President Bill Clinton (news - web sites), outlawed 19 types of military-style assault weapons. Under the 10-year prohibition enacted in 1994, certain powerful military-style assault weapons were outlawed, as were high-capacity ammunition magazines holding more than 10 rounds. The law expired at 1201EDT (0401GMT) September 13, 2004. REUTERS/Mannie Garcia

1. Link please
If he was holding a "M-16 assault rifle" it wasn't covered by the AWB and is still highly regulated.

Too bad cause I've seen yahoo have NEWS not seen anywhere else on these pic links. They always have 1 to 2 paragraphs of news associated. And often important news.

4. Thanks for the link
How disingenuous of the man to pretend the AW ban had anything to do with that type of rifle.

3. Bovine excrement
The M16 rifle is legally a "machinegun". It is not and was never legally classified as an assault weapon. The two categories are, er, were mutually exclusive. (The term assault weapon no longer has any meaning under federal law.

See http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/921.html - although it is at the moment out of date.

7. Hey DaveSZ, that's exactly what I said

To be precise I didn't say that machineguns are still available, but they are to qualified people who have the money, can follow the procedures and pass the background check, and aren't prohibited from owning one by state law.

My point is it is bullshit for that man to hold up an M16 and claim the demise of the AWB makes it generally available.
