Parting ways with Bush's gang
Neo-con Francis Fukuyama supported Bush until he invaded Iraq. Peter Fray reports on his new book.

Francis Fukuyama used to be part of the Washington gang that happily filled in the gaps in George Bush's intellectual and world experience. Many of his fellow members - Vice-President Dick Cheney, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz - have played defining roles in the Bush presidency, and will meet their political fate with him in November.

But Fukuyama has departed from Team Bush over Iraq. Despite his ranking as one of the world's foremost public intellectuals and a leading neoconservative thinker, he will not be voting Republican this year and believes his old ally, Rumsfeld, should have resigned over Iraq......SNIP..

fukuyama's attempts to reconcile his previous ideologies do little to convince this cynic that a leopard changes his spots...any thoughts?

2. "The End of History" -- what an ass
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 09:49 PM by CarolynEC
Fukuyama's publishers came up with a snappy title to sell a lot of books about a truly stupid premise. He's been riding that lucky break ever since. He may be a "leading neoconservative thinker" but he ain't no "public intellectual," that's abundantly clear.

3. "public intellectual"
a term thrown around very loosely indeed! I believe i once heard daniel pipes described in the same manner..leaving the inference in tatters..

4. Make that a "miserable failure of policy."
"Francis Fukuyama, once a champion of the Bush Administration, has turned against it over Iraq. He says the exercise was a 'failure of policy.'"

A "pin-up boy for the right" and a "public intellectual." My, my, my.

5. I read this as a dishonest neo-con attack on Latham, with the attacker ...

... attempting to distance himself from Bush in order to make his attack more credible to Aussies.
