Remember what Naomi Klein said about Obama prior to his election?

Naomi doesn't blame Obama. He wasn't hiding his policies. People were not willing to hear it.

I can recall pointing out some of these alarming Obama statements here at DU while he was running.
No one wanted to hear that his policies were not all that different from what we were hearing from
the right. In fact I was simply repeating what he said, saying it aloud so it would register.
I guess the alternative just seemed too inconceivable...another Republican. Now we're learning that
those slim choices are not choices at all relative to the real changes Americans are calling for.
And now it seems there is all this anger directed at Obama as though he had lied. Perhaps he led us
to believe he'd bring change while not offering substantially changed policies (rearranging the furniture)
but on many subjects what he said prior to his election and what he's done is pretty much what he said he'd do all along.
Not an excuse, but I hope we take more responsibility for our selective hearing and expectations.

4. I realize The President has been stymied of late but when he had a congressional majority I remember
these excerpts from his convention speech, the parts that led us to believe he would not continue policies that gave everything to corporations.

So much of the hope and change we were promised was immediately obliterated by his selections for financial advisors and the TARP bailouts. There were plenty of changes that COULD HAVE been made with a Democratic Congress that were simply put on hold during the years he attempted to be the President of compromise while getting his hand slapped away at every turn.

Why couldn't some of the following work (excerpts from convention speech) be done when he had the party backing?

snip-
This country is more generous than one where a man in Indiana has to pack up the equipment he's worked on for twenty years and watch it shipped off to China, and then chokes up as he explains how he felt like a failure when he went home to tell his family the news.

snip-
We measure the strength of our economy not by the number of billionaires we have or the profits of the Fortune 500, but by whether someone with a good idea can take a risk and start a new business, or whether the waitress who lives on tips can take a day off to look after a sick kid without losing her job - an economy that honors the dignity of work.

snip-
It's a promise that says the market should reward drive and innovation and generate growth, but that businesses should live up to their responsibilities to create American jobs, look out for American workers, and play by the rules of the road.

snip-
That's the promise we need to keep. That's the change we need right now. So let me spell out exactly what that change would mean if I am President.

snip-
Change means a tax code that doesn't reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it.

Unlike John McCain, I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America.

snip-
Now is the time to change our bankruptcy laws, so that your pensions are protected ahead of CEO bonuses; and the time to protect Social Security for future generations.

And now is the time to keep the promise of equal pay for an equal day's work, because I want my daughters to have exactly the same opportunities as your sons.

Now, many of these plans will cost money, which is why I've laid out how I'll pay for every dime - by closing corporate loopholes and tax havens that don't help America grow.

5. I ignored his statements and just followed him closely
at www.progressivepunch.org/ I knew he was no liberal savior despite the selective parsing of his speeches by people who really wanted to hope he was.

If we want to move the man to the left, we're going to have to move Congress far to the left. That's a pretty tall order given how completely propagandized this country has been in recent years.

The main hope I have that it can be done is how people have been awakened by the Occupy movement. Blaming poor black women in the inner city has gotten old and tired and was never true in the first place. A lot of Mexican illegals, the most recent bogeymen, are going home because the Mexican economy is in better shape than the US economy is. And that pretty much has them casting around for someone to blame.

The Occupy movement has at last managed to inform them who really is to blame.
