Jake has just left Douglas, GA by train and arrived at his new assignment. This letter is postmarked 1 February 1943.
From Greenwood, MS
Saturday night
Dearest Dad,
We left Douglas at 12:30 Thursday night. The train was only 3 hours late but we didn't arrive in Atlanta until 11:30 Friday morning. At 3:00 a.m. we rolled into Greenwood, Miss. We were lucky to have Pullmans but there was no diner for us to use so we had only one meal and that was in Atlanta.
This place is not too bad but we feel like pioneers because we are just the second class to get here. Our barracks, with each room occupied by 4 men, are made like barracks in combat areas. Our latrines are in a different building about 100 yards away. Things will be better when they finish up everything.
They have had bad weather down here and this is the stickiest mud you've ever seen anywhere and when it's dry, the dust is choking. We are the first to live in our rooms so they are really a dirty mess most of the time.
The food, as told by the preceding class, is very good. Our first meals have been really good. I hope they will continue that way because I can stand anything if I get plenty to eat.
Love to all,
Jake Jr.
