Jake gets a telephone call
Edited on Wed Aug-24-11 08:06 AM by mgc1961
Jake put this letter in the mail the same day as he posted his letter about barely passing his check-ride. It seems he put the first letter in the mail, got an unexpected telephone call from his parents, then wrote a follow-up letter that same day. The postdate is 25 January 1943, the same day as the 45 hour check-ride letter.

From Douglas, GA

Dear Dad,

I was mighty glad to hear from you and talk to all the folks. If I have my final check-ride today, I wouldn't have any trouble passing it after talking to you. I didn't realize I would feel so good just talking to the folks.

Don't worry about me feeling low. I didn't let that lousy check-ride bother me too much. I'll just give him a real ride on the next one. Mr. Walker is one of the hardest riders down here and he didn't give any favor to me. He said that I gave him one of the best rides he had. We got a new instructor and the first boy that rode with Paul failed so when I rode he checked close on me to see if the new instructor was O.K. Don't worry about him though. I really feel at ease with him.

I didn't get a chance to say much to you on the phone. I was so surprised to hear from you. My next check will be in about the first and that ought to put me a good bit ahead. You may buy me a $25 war bond each month. That will make a total of $73.75 out each month.

It won't be long before I'll be on my way to Greenwood, Mississippi.

Love to all.

Your son,

Jake Jr.
