Jim Wallis: Christians Must Call For This War to End
Christians Must Call For This War to End
by Jim Wallis 05-06-2011

There is no more room or time for excuses. The war in Afghanistan — now the longest war in American history — no longer has any justification, and I am calling upon Christians, along with other people of good, moral sense, to lead the effort to finally end this war and bring our troops home. On moral, financial, and strategic grounds, the continuation of the war in Afghanistan cannot be justified. The completion of the largest and most expensive manhunt in history for Osama bin Laden must be a turning point to completely rethink our response to terrorism. The threats of terrorists are still real, but it is now clear that full-scale military action is not the most effective response.

It was the campaign against bin Laden and al Qaeda that was always used to justify the war in Afghanistan. General David Petraeus has said there are about 100 al Qaeda fighters in Afghanistan. We have more than 100,000 American troops and another 40,000 coalition soldiers in Afghanistan. That means 1,400 soldiers for each al Qaeda fighter. It costs about $1 million a year to deploy and support each American soldier — or more than $100 billion a year total. That breaks down to our country spending $1 billion per year, per al Qaeda fighter. Every deficit hawk in America should now oppose this war. The cost is simply too high, especially when compared with all the painful budget choices this failed war is causing us to make.

Even more important is the human cost of 1,570 Americans killed, more than 10,000 wounded, and many more families separated — lives disrupted and changed forever. And Christians must always care about the casualties on the other side, especially innocent lives who are the collateral damage of war. From 2007 to 2010 that number is at least 10,000. This war is not worth that human cost. The damages it causes far outweigh the possible results, and that makes this war unjustifiable. As Chuck Colson recently said, “Maintaining 100,000 troops in Afghanistan no longer meets the just war criteria.”

Continuing the war will lead to greater human and financial costs without a clear understanding of what success could even look like. What began as an understandable action to pursue those who launched the attack on September 11, has now become a war of occupation in Afghanistan; a massive counter-insurgency; the defense of an utterly corrupt and incompetent government; and an impossible effort at military-led nation-building. Long term and sustained strategies of development and democracy building will not be accomplished by an endless, massive military occupation and counter-insurgency; in fact, our current strategy will prevent long-term nation-building....

These are good folks...BRING THEM HOME...and take care of the BROKEN SPIRITS AND BODIES..and GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO DO FOR THEIR OWN COUNTRY!

WHY ...cant we DO THIS?

3. I don't know where our Christians are these days...
Earlier on with Iraq Invasion they were visible...but only a few of them I've become "Un-Churched because of Christians not standing up against this Killing and Violence that we are doing in the Middle East for War for Corporations who want Mineral, Oil and Every right to the treasures of countries that can't compete with us because of our power.

America was founded on Radicals who fled from a King and Corporatists who controlled it all...Mining, Minerals and Agriculture. We founded this NEW WORLD on the backs of IMMIGRANTS looking for better life than they had in the Old World.

Religion...Christianity is supposed to be based on PEACE for the LEAST AMONGST US! Yet, Wall Street Multi-BILLIONAIRES RULE and they GOT AWAY WITH CRIMINALITY.

I don't know how any Mainstream Churches can get away with congregations that don't run crying out of Church over the Hipocritical stuff that comes out of the Pulpit these days.

It wasn't always like this. But just as Wall Stree rules us these days...our Mainstream Churches left the whole dialogue about what Christ and Charity and the Beatitudes from the New Testament were all about!

How anyone can walk into a church these days and not go "running out with tears streaming down face" is beyond me.

Charity...Faith, Hope and Love. And to the Least of these.....

Martin Luther King got it...but since his death...all has gone down hill. We have preachers who know not what they preach and congregations who know not what they are about.

But, without some "Moral Compass" our whole civilzation is in peril. Where will Compassion come from if not from some "Organized Source?" Where? Libertarianism, Atheism? WHERE?

7. Jim Wallis is one of the few ministers speaking out about what Christianity......
....really means in our society. The fundamentalists have destroyed the beliefs and moral values of thousands of people by allowing themselves to become tools of the wealthy and powerful. They will be judged according to their works.

6. Wallis is a Republican planning on runing for office
He promoted Bush on the basis of Bush's faith, when that served his agenda.

""I'm often asked what I think about the faith of the President George W. Bush. I think it is sincere. I think it's very real. I think it's deeply held. I met the president when he was president-elect at a meeting in Austin. He spoke of his faith. He spoke of his desire for a compassionate conservatism, for a faith-based initiative that would do something for poor people."

"What is my calling? What am I supposed to do? I think running for office, public office, can be a divine calling. I mean, I've wrestled with that very question myself."

12. Care to offer some actual evidence instead of selective out of context quotes?
Saying he thinks Bush's faith is sincere doesn't make him a Republican. I think Bush's faith is sincere. I just think he is sincerely wrong.

And on the other quote - it sounds to me as if Wallis considered running for office and rejected it - not that he is planning to run for office, let alone as a Republican.
