Conservative "Sleeper Agents" in Hollywood? The Right-Wing's New War for Culture
The new conservative mediamakers are shedding the baggage of culture war hangups, freeing up energy to infiltrate culture industries and attack the left.

February 22, 2011 | “You looking for Hollywood? Come on in!”

I walked into a small but packed room at this year's Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) for a primer on entering show business stage right. It was the panel’s second year at the annual convention, and the young people gathered were planning to skip the D.C. internships and look for jobs in film, music and television.

The movement is shifting away from the outright opposition to popular culture that defined the culture wars of the 1990s. They have embraced a two-pronged strategy to get their message out: making their own films and music, and using Tea Party or church networks to distribute them; and working inside the mainstream entertainment industry to release films and other products with movement themes into the mass market.

The prospect of political action and personal fame proves alluring for a generation where online celebrity meshes easily with real-world political power. A young man canvassed the room--“who does video?”--saying that he helps young videographers plug into local campaigns as he passed out his business card. Young men discussed their Twitter feeds, and two others tried to understand Obama through the prism of Star Wars. ...............(more)

1. At which they will fail miserably...
Conservatives lack imagination and do not inspire hope.

3. So this article is set in Washington, DC.
It is about a bunch of conservatives who, as always, are planning to make hit films and songs to promote their vision. They always do this, they always fail. The reasons are diverse but also concrete and nameable. Note that none of them are currently working and that the 'plan' is to make hit popular culture. With a conservative message. All they have to do is create the content, get a green light or find funding independently, contract a large number of highly compensated artists who always get a say about this and that, secure distribution, promote the product effectively, sit back and just watch the millions turn out at the box office! That's all they have to do! Just make hits with a strong message, easy as pie!

4. Yeah....
What these guys are oblivious to is the fact that their own sacrosanct "free market"
is a big factor in why they keep losing "culture wars".

7. The churches where I live are being very successful in doing this kind of thing.
Promoting their own message. And, so far given the last election, and the demise of Huff Post, TPM as a force other than for promoting sensational headlines, celebrity and Palin, Bachman, Bech Conservative porn..I'd say we on the Left are pretty much where the lack of momentum is, these days.

They are winning....just look around. The rest of us are just "Fucking Retards," dontcha know...

e.g., "Waiting for Superman," "24," etc.

K&R'd, and thanks, marmar; I've had my suspicions for a while, and am worried that so few others seem concerned.

6. An uphill struggle for these goobers
1) The people they hope to drown out are often "the best and the brightest", while the folks they would like to put forward are 2nd rate on their good days (ref. Ronnie Regan)

2) The "amazing" tendency of bigoted, hateful tirades to lead to career implosion in show biz and pro sports.

8. Don't dismiss these people friends. Remember they are after hearts and minds. I don't care what
kind a movies they do as long as we know who they are. Who knows maybe they can make a decent movie.

9. Generally, Rightwing propaganda doesn't sell well. So, don't expect to see a lot in Hollywood
There are Rightwing darlings, of course - Kelsey Grammer, Clint Eastwood, Craig T. Nelson -- but, they have to have some talent. That is impossible to buy and hard to produce from scratch.

Creative and gifted people don't tend to be narrow-minded conformists or striving yes-men. Insurance executives. Poultry farmers. General contractors.
