Mike Thompson: Global warming and snow
Edited on Wed Feb-09-11 02:44 AM by UrbScotty
From the Detroit Free Press:

So, if the planet’s warming, how come America’s been digging out from blizzard after blizzard? Answer me that, you brainiac know-it-all scientists with your fancy instrumentation thingys and weather charts and stuff. What’s that you say? The explanation is pretty simple?

As Al Gore said on his blog recently, “Snow has two simple ingredients: cold and moisture. Warmer air collects moisture like a sponge until it hits a patch of cold air. When temperatures dip below freezing, a lot of moisture creates a lot of snow. A rise in global temperature can create all sorts of havoc, ranging from hotter dry spells to colder winters, along with increasingly violent storms, flooding, forest fires and loss of endangered species.”

Quit making sense.

Along with this article is an animated series of cartoons with a guy saying:

"Since there's a blizzard outside my window, global warming is a hoax!"

"Since I ate a big supper, there's no world hunger problem!"

"Since my neighborhood isn't overcrowded, there's no global overpopulation crisis!"

...and so on.

1. And of course, the deniers are out in force on the comments thread
Lots of comments about how Thompson is only a cartoonist and doesn't know what he's talking about, from men in trailer parks who think they know more about climate science than actual climate scientists.

2. I find it depressing how stupid the commenters are ...
Edited on Wed Feb-09-11 12:36 PM by Geoffrey_Lebowski
Over and over these people in the comments talk about how there's these natural cycles of heating and cooling of the earth, like they personally did the research and concluded these facts ... or like ONLY THEY were born knowing this shit, and 'the Scientists' just don't have the vast insight and depth of knowledge on this whole 'cycle' thing that they do.

HELLO, MORONS?

Who the hell do you think TOLD YOU ABOUT THESE CYCLES that you now so readily accept as fact?

Could it be, possibly, the SAME F*CKING SCIENTISTS who are NOW TELLING YOU that what is going on IS NOT PART OF these NORMAL PATTERNS?

Friggin' idiots, I swear to Goddess.

Or how about the endless regurgitation of the whole 'In the 70's they were talking about another Ice Age, now they've changed their story, ergo, why should I believe what I'm being told now?' fallacy?

DERP!

HELLO, not only were the scientists at that time concerned with what was going to happen due to mass amounts of particulates being emitted (which has been hugely curbed in the interim), but back in the 70's, the 'Weatherman' was about as reliable as a frickin' Astrologer.

Nowadays, the weather people tell you it's gonna be cold and raining 3 days from now ... guess what ... they're almost always RIGHT!

Back in the 70's, the entire WORLD had like as much computing power (i.e. the ability to crunch numbers in order to make predictions about stuff like weather) as I now have here on my friggin desktop right now.

The deniers inability to use the most basic logical reasoning processes just never ceases to amaze me.

I mean, do they also doubt that the Earth is round, and that the Earth revolves around the Sun?

After all, it was only 500 years ago when the so-called 'authorities' in Rome were insisting it was Flat, and that Sun revolved around the Earth? I mean, OBVIOUSLY we can't trust 'authorities' since they change their stories ... for all we know, the Earth is Hexagonal shaped, right?
