12. So we should riot to depose Obama? Is that the point?
We could install Palin/Bachmann up there as dual heads of state with Beck and Limbaugh as dual vice presidents.
What fun!

16. Well...
..until the US is EVEN FREAKING CLOSE TO BEING AS BAD as the countries mentioned - I doubt it will come.

Some people have this ideal about how horrible it is in this country. It could be better - for sure - but to even suggest that we are in line with Ivory Coast, Yemen etc - is completely myopic and silly.

6. Not until trade routes have collapsed and they're wearing patches
on patches and putting newspaper into their shoes and walking everywhere because they can't afford gas or replacement parts cannibalized from wrecks at junkyards. Oh, and paying huge payments on houses that are worth a fifth of what they paid for them, if that much.

At that point, maybe they'll wake up and realize that feeding abandoned families isn't what's been keeping them artificially poor all these years.

11. McPravda - I like that!
Back in the nineties, I used to talk about McNewspaper in the lunchroom where I worked. I'd also read the nominally 'serious' articles and laugh out loud. If what I was laughing about, I'd explain it, in relatively simple terms. Usually the result was dead silence until someone changed the subject.

Now I'm thinking of printing some new signs for the free newspaper stands on campus - I don't know who pays for it, but the New York Times is free where I go to school.

McPravda - all the news you can stomach.

14. I remember telling my wife in late 2008 that this was coming.
I remember late 2008, grasping the enormity of what the banks had done, and telling my wife that we would see governments topple over this. Everything that is happening is happening because the global system is collapsing on itself.

Big Media and Hate Radio have the teabaggers and other members of the ignorati convinced that teachers, Hispanics, and Dems are the problem instead of Cheney, Scalia, McTurtle, and Monsanto. We as a nation are too stupid to do anything worthwhile.

The teabaggers? They already have, and

1. That's not the point of this thread
2. we won't retaliate, as exhibited by the fact that no retribution has been taken against Hate Radio stars, teabaggers, or Cabal News traitors while they destroyed the nation over the last 20 years.

25. Agree, i am worried
And they will certainly try. But remember that Egyptians recently had a show of unity between Christians and Muslims after extremists attacked churches at christmas. Perhaps this will put a damper on the religious nutters.

Egypt has a large secular part of the population, but on the other hand, so do Iran..

27. I think that's why the US government doesent support this revolution
Islamist control of Egypt means another major threat to Israel and islamic control of the Suez canal. Egypt is the largest recipient of US foreign aid, apparently. All to keep that secular dictator in power. They never learned from the Iranian revolution.
Still, the Islamists are keeping a low profile in this one.

Mohammed El-Baradei as president. Now THAT would be awesome.

31. But I presume you do not advocate supporting torturing dictators?
What happens in Egypt should be up to the Egyptian people - and they, obviously, are sick of this

http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/01/28

But you don't need to read the papers to see what has gone wrong. The filth and the slums, the open sewers and the corruption of every government official, the bulging prisons, the laughable elections, the whole vast, sclerotic edifice of power has at last brought Egyptians on to their streets.

Not to mention the brutal repression and torture.

The US is a mockery around the world for touting "human rights" and "Democracy" while supporting brutal Dictators. And that includes the Obama administation - our "Nobel" President - what an irony.

24. Al Jazeera reports protestors have taken control of Alexandria

7:15 pm - The military has now arrived in Alexandria, though Rawya Rageh reports that they aren't confronting the protesters there with violence. In fact, she says, they are giving them the thumbs up.

The situation is different in Suez, where Jamal Elshayyal says police are still clashing with protesters.

It's when the military refuses to fight that governments fall. We might actually see the fall of the dicatorship, against the will of the US, mind you.

Question is, what kind of government will they get instead?

28. Egypt, Revolutions and Food

http://www.ianwelsh.net/egypt-revolutions-and-food/

Virtually every oligopoly in the world is trying to grab as much money as it can by raising prices in collusion while not improving service or goods quality unless they absolutely much. And if you can even buy the good stuff, it’ll cost your through the nose. As one of my friends quips, “I buy organic meat and eggs and milk because when I was a kid, that’s just what we called meat and milk and eggs”. Make the regular quality shit, charge for the stuff that isn’t crap.
