Harry Belafonte: "He (Obama) Plays the Game that He Plays Because He Sees No Threat from ...poor"
Harry Belafonte on Obama: "He Plays the Game that He Plays Because He Sees No Threat from Evidencing Concerns for the Poor"

We speak with legendary singer, actor, humanitarian and activist, Harry Belafonte. "I think plays the game that he plays because he sees no threat from evidencing concerns for the poor," Belafonte says. "He sees no threat from evidencing a deeper concern for the needs of black people, as such. He feels no great threat from evidencing a greater policy towards the international community, for expressing thoughts that criticize the American position on things and turns that around. Until we do that, I think we will be forever disappointed in what that administration will deliver."

1. Harry is right.
We need a People's Movement from below. Fuck the "independents". They were never on our side anyway.

17. He thinks he no longer needs the people.
We were used and cast off...like a cheap one-night stand.

5. The poor don't even get close to making it onto the radar screen. They have no
voice. Big money will get one, a group, on the radar screen really fast. Like what are the poor really going to do. Money first in USA, Inc.

6. Harry Belafonte is a great man, great humanitarian and activist.
It's very sad to think of what could have been with this Presidency.

7. I'm not clear on what he means.
Your edited version makes sense (although I don't agree): "he sees no threat from . . . poor."

But what he said was different: "he sees no threat from evidencing concerns for the poor." "he sees no threat from evidencing a deeper concern."

Huh?

9. What does he mean by "evidencing concerns for the poor" and
"evidencing a greater policy towards the international community."?

10. I think "evidencing" just means showing.
He could also have meant to say "evincing".

Still, having parsed the words, it's not hard to see what Harry Belafonte actually meant.

16. Having reread it a number of times, I believe he meant evading.
Nothing else makes sense. It could be a problem with the transcription. This confusion is not to detract from his eloquence. His comment

"And as a consequence, Barack Obama has nothing to listen to, except his detractors and those who help pave the way to his own personal comfort with power—power contained, power misdirected, power not fully engaged.

is cutting and insightful yet so diplomatic. I love that quote.

14. Thank you, Mr. Belafonte for your call to action. That's how I interpreted this all too short
interview. If we don't agitate for change it ain't gonna come. As Mr. Belafonte said all Obama has to listen to are his critics so he bends to their will and not that of the working class. We need to dial up the heat.
