From The Sydney Morning Herald today:
"Here is a selection of the secret United States embassy files relating to Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, made available exclusively by WikiLeaks to The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald.
We believe we are acting in the public interest by publishing both news reports on these matters and selected cables on which those reports are based.
We will post further cables here after reporting their contents in our newspapers and this website."
http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/exclusive-the-wikileaks-australia-files-20101215-18xwx.htmlThese cables show that the American Ambassador was totally clued in as to what was happening behind the scenes in Canberra, although the Australian people were not.
It's hard to believe that the members of the Canberra Press Gallery didn't know the inside stories; they just weren't telling us. Once again, Wikileaks has proven why it's performing a public service and why it should not be shut down. If the journalists aren't prepared to do their job properly, they should move over for those who will.
