1. Well, there you have it and the republican response is....
..."the largest sources of carbon dioxide come from humans when they exhale. So just keep breathing in!"

2. There's a little discussion in LBN
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=627206

but the response has been "Shell? Pah."

I'm skeptical that sequestration is a good way to go - it's a 'big technology' fix, that will itself consume a lot of energy. I tend more towards nuclear power as a short term solution, and a balance of renewable sources and much less power consumption as the long term answer. A smaller world population seems pretty much vital to me - free birth control for anyone who wants it anywhere in the world would be a good start.

3. When I read this
I thought -- This is what happens when you let a scientist tell the truth.

He goes off and scares the sh*t out of people. Not because he is a fear monger, but because he is telling the very scary truth. But now the flacks from the rest of the oil companies, and the oligarchs who love them will have to shred him.

I think the Mr. Oxburgh should strickly stick to surface transport for the foreseeable future.

4. Here's the Guy:
Lord Oxburgh
Non-executive Chairman of Shell Transport
Born November 2, 1934. A British national, appointed a Director in 1996 and non-executive Chairman in March 2004. Latest date for retirement by rotation 2004 and he will retire in 2005 following his 70th birthday. Held a number of scientific and university appointments including Chief Scientific Advisor, Ministry of Defence and Rector, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. Chairman SETNET and Chairman House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology.

This is Royal Dutch Shell. They probably have quite a different corporate culture from most American-based oil companies, maybe even their own US subsidiary.
