99ers Protest New York Unemployment Office
The unemployment extensions expire on November 30. Tier 5 and the 99ers haven’t been given the time of day from Congress, although tax cuts, government spending, and even illegal immigrants are getting their day in the agenda. With the extensions expiring and tensions mounting, there was a protest in New York City.

A group of 99ers that engaged in a peaceful protest in New York City on Friday, November 12th, were arrested by the New York Police Department. Four people were arrested, during a protest outside, of a New York City unemployment office.

“Economists say one way to grow this economy is by extending unemployment benefits because these workers then plow that money immediately back into the economy,” Rep. Carolyn Maloney, a democrat, said to New York Based WABC-Channel 7.

Some of the protesters blocked the street, in an effort to draw attention to the plight of “99ers”, a group of up to 6 Million unemployed and/or unemployed job seekers, who have exhausted between 73-99 weeks of unemployment benefits.

A bill that currently sits within the Senate Finance Committee, S-3706- “The Americans Want to Work Act” sponsored by Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), would provide up to 20 additional weeks of supplemental income benefits and offer a $2000 tax credit for businesses to hire the long-term jobless or unemployed.

On September 28th, an effort for the bill to reach the Senate Floor for an up or vote, was blocked by Lame-Duck Senator George LeMieux (R-FL), citing deficit concerns.

“Ninety-niners” in many cases, have been without any benefits since April 2010, for a running total of eight months. A majority of these former or unemployed American Workers, desire to return back into the workforce.
