Google gets close to 'the creepy line'
more:

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/technology/shanerichmond/100005766/eric-schmidt-getting-close-to-the-creepy-line/

Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, has described his company’s policy: “Google policy is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”

Schmidt was talking to The Atlantic about the possibility of a Google implant – a chip under your skin that would track you and provide easy web access. That, Schmidt said, was probably over ‘the creepy line’.

However, he followed that by saying: “With your permission you give us more information about you, about your friends, and we can improve the quality of our searches. We don’t need you to type at all. We know where you are. We know where you’ve been. We can more or less know what you’re thinking about.”

1. that is kind of creepy.
I don't think Google knows what I am thinking about or, ever will know.

2. Never use Google for anything. Use ask.com, for example, and use quality
anonymous proxy servers... etc. will give some level of privacy...

6. I just noticed something
I noticed that whenever I do a search in Google then go to Amazon, Amazon features items related to my previous Google search. It creeps me out. I did a search for it and saw an article about a plugin for the Chrome browser that does that. However I'm using Firefox and do not have that plugin. I can see how some people would want that functionality but I'm somewhat maniacal about my privacy. It creeps me out that Google and Amazon are doing this without telling me about it or giving me any option to opt-out of it.

7. Try this...
Free browser add-on for Firefox, Chrome, and IE.

http://www.ghostery.com/

Ghostery is a browser tool available for Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer. It scans the page for scripts, pixels, and other elements and notifies the user of the companies whose code is present on the page. These page elements aren't otherwise visible to the user, and often not detailed in the page source code. Ghostery allows users to learn more about these companies and their practices, and block the page elements from loading if the user chooses.
Ghostery sees the invisible web - tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons. Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity.
After showing you who's tracking you, Ghostery also gives you a chance to learn more about each company it identifies. How they describe themselves, a link to their privacy policies, and a sampling of pages where we've found them are just a click away.
Ghostery allows you to block scripts from companies that you don't trust, delete local shared objects, and even block images and
iframes. Ghostery puts your web privacy back in your hands.

8. #7 gave an excellent recommendation. You also might want to
additionally install the Firefox addons BetterPrivacy and Abine.

Probably also what happened is Google had set a cookie and Amazon read the cookie... they probably have some type of partner relationship. It is creepy, isn't it...

10. Ha! I just noticed something else ... stoopid stoopid me
I had ALSO recently added the Amazon Gold Box Daily Deals widget to my Google home page. Duh. I don't *know* if that's what's telling Amazon about my searches but I certainly get what I deserve if it is, don't I?

I've had BetterPrivacy ever since I learned about Flash Cookies. Love it. It's so satisfying to see all the flash cookies grow until I close my browser and they're all wiped out. I'll definitely check out Abine and Ghostery. Thanks for the recommendations.
