Gay-Bashing Emerging as Core Christian Right Election Strategy

Keep your eyes on the Christian Right’s 2010 Values Voter Summit in two weeks in Washington, DC. http://www.valuesvotersummit.org.

The main title for the event is “Rise to the Challenge, Rally to the Cause.” The issues highlighted are “Protect Marriage, Champion Life, Strengthen the Military, Limit Government, Control Spending, Defend Our Freedoms.”

That’s a wish list for the Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, and Tea Party crowd; but note the order of the issues.


“Protect Marriage” comes first, and that’s the frame for the ongoing Christian Right campaign against basic human rights for gay men, lesbians, and anyone else who lives or supports alternatives to the “traditional” family built around patriarchy and heterosexism.

“Do not open unless you are deeply alarmed by President Obama’s plans for America, read the front of one direct mailing from the Family Research Council (2010). “The Hard-core socialists in control of our country are bent on advancing their damaging agenda regardless of what the American people thinks,” writes Tony Perkins, the group’s President.

According to Perkins, that agenda is “promoting homosexuality, rationing your healthcare, restricting your religious freedom, expanding abortion, and more.”

1. Emerging? This is about all they have had to offer for better than twenty years now.

The most delicious irony of it all, of course, is how many of the strident anti-gay campaigners have been married two, three, or more times.

According to their own approach to Scripture, they are unrepentantly living in a state of adultery, yet they are out there posing as defenders of the sacred nature of marriage.

(And this is to say nothing of those who are out there consorting with luggage-handlers.)

2. Christians and "America's Christless Christians"

Since there have been some splits in church organizations recently, it is clear that the truely devout believers are preferring to disassociate themselves with "America's Christless Christians" who are only interested in the power of religion (along with bigotry, scapegoating, etc.), and have no interest in the carefully taught lessons of Jesus Christ.

And that's a good thing. I can almost hear Jerry Fallwell's anguished cries from Hell.

3. So fitting that Tony Perkins shares a name with the actor who played Norman Bates

A creepy name for a creepy guy (though perhaps a little unfair on Anthony Perkins, who was merely an actor playing a psycho, as distinct from his near-namesake, who's the genuine article).
