In The History of White People, Nell Irvin Painter argued that many white Americans have come to believe in a mythic pale race whose ancestry can be traced back for centuries. She, too, went on to detail the many twists and turns that the majority’s views of who “white people” are have taken as new lighter-skinned immigrants came to our shores bearing the burden of “minority” status, and then pushed themselves into the mainstream and demanded -- and eventually got -- the privileges that accompany whiteness in American society. It’s long been argued that various groups of lighter skinned immigrants have only truly been assimilated into the fabric of the nation once they began to see themselves, as a group, as superior to African Americans.

2050 will only be a terrible year for those white folks who hold a rigid, 19th century definition of whiteness -- white supremacists, in other words. They will become a minority, but, fortunately for the country, they already are (at least the ones who are open about it).

Here’s how Pat Buchanan, one of the few white supremacists offered a big media forum, views this ticking demographic time-bomb:

By countries of origin, America will be a Third World nation. Our cities will look like Los Angeles today. Los Angeles and the cities of Texas, Arizona and California will look like Mexico City.

When we all belong to "minorities," what will hold us together? With the rise of group rights and identity politics, we are already falling out and falling apart over racial preferences and ethnic entitlements.

The lower parts of the Caucasus Mountains are situated in the Greater Middle East area. They are generally perceived to be a dividing line between Asia and Europe, and territories in Caucasia are alternately considered to be in one or both continents.

The most numerous peoples of the Caucasian-language family are Georgians (4,600,000); Chechens (1,500,000); and Avars (1,100,000). Some Neo-Grammarians in the late 1800s were trying to find the Indo-European Urheimat or "homeland" and decided that there was vocabulary shared among all IE languages which, after semantic reconstruction, pointed to referents found only on the (crucially) north slopes of the Caucasus. That, of course, unlike Urartu and the area around Lake Van (since we're talking at least that long ago), places it cleanly in Europe. Since Indo-Europeans were white, they all, the argument went, originated in the Caucasus. Then others moved in, presumably. And then, late in the game, some Turks showed up.

Anyway, the word for "salmon" was one of the words. Losos' in Russian, cognate with "gravlax" (hence also "lox"). "Beech" was another such word. Meekly skim Pokorny (ha!) for the rest.

Oddly, that blurb left out S. Ossetia, arguably no less independent than Abkhazia but whose inhabitants don't really speak a Caucasian language at all. Those Sarmatians really got around.

The Caucasian languages are really neat. I'd never want to study one. But I've read more analyses of Kabardian vocalism than I'd care to admit to.

Personally, I'd rather put the PIE homeland a bit further east, if only because they'd have to adopt the horse and introduce it earlier than most, and we can pretty much pin down where horse domestication first occurred. No, not the kurgans. (I'll gratuitously add I think Gimbutas was wrong. Cranky. But still wrong.)
