Sharron Angle Is Coming for Your Pot, Booze, and Porn, But She Says You Can Keep Your Guns

A world without pot, booze, or pornography? Many Nevadans might find that unimaginable. But not Sharron Angle.

Many journalists have associated Republican Party Senate candidates Sharron Angle and Rand Paul with the Tea Party movement, which is often characterized as libertarian (a few disagree with that take.) Some of Rand Paul’s views, such as his anti-war stance, do seem to fit the libertarian mold. And both candidates are strong supporters of gun rights (Angle has even hinted at armed anti-government insurrection.) But both are opposed to legalized marijuana and Sharron Angle takes things even further. During a recent interview Angle said she thinks both marijuana and alcoholic beverages should be illegal. Then there’s porn. At least up into 2005 Angle was promoting, on her own SharronAngle.com web site, a Nevada anti-tax PAC called We The People whose stated goals included outlawing pornography.

As the PAC’s “We The People Principles” website page declared from 2003 through 2007, “Current concepts of political correctness limit freedom of speech and should be eliminated. Pornography is not freedom of speech.” We The People’s view of homosexuality was notable as well. As it’s “Principles” page stated, “The radical homosexual movement and other groups seek to destroy the traditional family structure which is the underpinning of society.” The page also railed against atheists, the ACLU, and the National Education Association.

It will be difficult for Angle to claim she was unaware of the We The People PAC’s positions because, as her official biography declares, “She is proud of her past chairwomanship of We the People Nevada PAC that sponsored the Property Tax Restraint Initiative.” ..........(more)

7. In the US Senate
she won't be making laws for Nevada, she'll be voting on them for the country as a whole. I have little fear that we're going to go back to full-blown Prohibition, although the MADD-types would like to ban people from driving if they've even seen a bottle of beer in the last three hours.

I have to wonder what angle Angle is coming from with her anti-alcohol stance. The only Westerners I know who feel that way are Mormons, and a few of the most radical Baptists.

6. Libertarians generally push for more personal freedom
As a byproduct of more private/personal freedom, smaller government is also associated with libertarianism.
Libertarians can be conservative or progressive in economic/political theory.

Obviously, she's extremely conservative... but she is not libertarian.
If she supports the restriction of personal freedoms to accomplish her policies then she is authoritarian.
Bush was an authoritarian.

Politics is like a two dimensional grid.
Progressive and Conservative (left/right) typically describes values and economic theory.
Authoritarian and Libertarian (up/down) typically describes political structure and execution.

14. Libertarians generally are crazy
Libertarianism is a screwy utopian political theory that has never been tried -- mostly because it can't -- and it appeals to people of limited intelligence and maturity.

20. That's like saying liberals are all crazy because we don't want people to have to work for a living.
It may be true of some people, but broad-brushing an entire school of political thought based on the nutjobs promotes nothing but division. This country would be a hell of a lot better off if we had a bigger libertarian streak in our drug laws, in our tolerance toward others, and elsewhere.

22. It surely is true they are nuts
Edited on Mon Jun-21-10 12:17 AM by Bert
Of course I am talking of true libertarians, not those with slight libertarian leanings. The slogan would be a shotgun in every house and a bunker in every backyard. Libertarians believe in a total abscence of any and all regulation or much of any society at all and no form of social contract. Most tea baggers however are only libertarian on certain issues that suit them. Like saying they are for small government when it comes to unemployment or health care, but they love their police force and millitary which in the true libertarian philosophy would be practically nonexistent. My vision of true libertarianism would be someting out of the road warrior.

Seriously, w/her extreme 11th. century views, how could she even get 9% of the vote in Clark County, (where all the people live)....Won't matter what she does in the rest of the state if Reid can destroy her in the greater LV area...

12. Does She Oppose Gambling?
Seems logical when you are a RW rider on the Temperance Express. Also, has she stated her views on legalized prostition.
Nevadans might be curious on these topics.

Sharron Angle's Campaign Battles Reporter, Calls Him 'Term That Can't Be Repeated'
First Posted: 06-18-10 10:38 AM | Updated: 06-18-10 10:38 AM

The YouTube hits keep coming for Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle -- who, despite ducking everything but conservative media, remains a must-watch figure among 2010 contenders.

The Tea Party favorite was en route to a softball interview with conservative radio host Roger Hedgecock on Thursday when a local Nevada television station swept in and posed very basic questions about some of her more controversial statements. Asked about calls to privatize Social Security and end the EPA, Angle accused the reporter of echoing Harry Reid's talking points. Pressed later (during her walk through the parking lot) about her predilection for "Second Amendment remedies" to deal with Congress's tyrannical ways, Angle refused to comment. Instead, her campaign called up the reporter after the questioning to call him an "idiot" and another term that, apparently, couldn't be repeated.

Angle has been seeking to avoid these types of uncomfortable media moments by forgoing formal interviews with actual journalists. National Republican Senatorial Committee John Cornyn is on record saying she won't be ready to face the press for "a few weeks" -- meaning that she's likely to be noncommittal on major questions about her policy platform and personal politics until she has a bit more seasoning.

But there has certainly been enough old footage to keep the spotlight focused on her. On Friday morning, for instance, Reid's campaign posted footage on its YouTube page in which Angle is quoted as saying that unemployment benefits actually make the unemployed "selfish."
