Feds Approve New Gulf Of Mexico Oil Well Near Louisiana
Obama last week extended a moratorium on wells in deep water like the BP one that blew out a mile below the surface in April and is gushing millions of gallons of oil. But at the same time, the president quietly allowed a three-week-old ban on drilling in shallow water to expire.

"I'm outraged," said Kieran Suckling, executive director for the Tucson, Ariz.,-based Center for Biological Diversity, after a reporter told him of the new permit. "How is it that shallow water drilling suddenly became safe again?"

"Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said in a news release Sunday that the extended moratorium on deepwater drilling was needed to provide time to implement new safety requirements. "http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/02/feds-approve-new-gulf-of_n_598199.html

I wish our President had better advice about this industry.

1. bait, switch for the public
maybe he thinks it's safer

but I think he was thinking of his industry friends, because what he just did was morally wrong and underhanded

2. regardless of how safe this one might be - the message coming from this approval
will not resonate well with the American public.

and can't say I blame them.

3. I have to wonder if the "stay behinds" are in charge? This makes no sense.

4. The birds continue to wash ashore covered in oil.
While I can't look at any more photos, I will continue to figure out why we are moving forward in this area to drill.

5. No more offshore drilling. Instead, cap the oil rig that is spilling oil into the ocean.

6. Here is a good reason not to continue drilling. The Atlantic coast is going to be covered in oil
from this offshore drilling mess that seems to have no end or solution to end it. Why create another potential disaster right next door.

Computer models project that oil from the BP disaster in the Gulf will hit loop currents by June, bringing oil up most of the Atlantic coast by the end of this month. The model, produced by the federally-funded National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), suggests it will be a quick trip up the coast for oil once it reaches the current.

According to this model, oil will shoot up Florida all the way to Virginia before it heads out to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean (and international waters). Strands of oil look to make their way towards the Chesapeake Bay and other points north as time goes on.http://firedoglake.com/
