We could save about as much oil as we get from deep water drilling by properly inflating our tires.
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/PET_CRD_GOM_S1_A.htm off-shore 2007 annual = 414 million barrels for the year

http://www.eia.doe.gov/basics/quickoil.html

For 2007:

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_crd_crpdn_adc_mbblpd_a.htm .. U.S. Crude Oil Production 5,064,000 barrels/day
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_imp_dc_NUS-Z00_mbblpd_a.htm.. U.S. Crude Oil Imports 10,031,000 barrels/day
Total Domestic Production and imports = 15.1 million bbl per day

Off-shore production per day = 1.13 million barrels

Off-shore production % of total consumed = 7.5%

Deep water drilling is supposed to be about half of off-shore production. So that means deep water off-shore production is about 3.75% of total consumption.

We could almost save that much gas/oil by keeping our tires inflated to the proper pressure.

http://www.fueleconomy.org/feg/maintain.shtml

You can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure.

1-(1/1.033) = 3.195%

Is keeping your tires properly inflated too much trouble to save the environment?

1. Boy, I remember them ridiculing Obama for mentioning this a while back.
"Oh, that's Obama's big solution? Put air in our tires! Pshaw! Horsefeathers! Conservation is for sissies! Real men DRILL BABY DRILL!"

2. I distinctly remember the GOP mocking Obama for this idea in 2008
The GOP has no solutions for conserving energy.

The GOP only brings problems, not solutions.

3. So bring back full service gas stations
All our cars would probably be in better working order if they did this. Wiper fluid wouldn't run out, our tires would be inflated properly, and we would also burn oil cleaner.

It would provide jobs, too. I would gladly pay more at the pump to get these services performed. IIRC, back when they used to do this, it was only a few cents more per gallon.

4. I wonder how many cars would not have broken down on the highway because a gas station attendant was
not there to point out something that needed attention! ..e.g. worn belts, hoses, leaking anti-freeze etc. Plus all the cars that are running 'dirty' because of something that should have been attended to, but most of us don't think of unless reminded (running from work to home, or taking care of kids will make you not think of the 'little' things that might need attention.

what's that saying:... "penny saved pound foolish"?

5. you miss the point--oil companies do not profit from conservation (or alternative energy or...
giving oil producing countries a fair prices for their reserves).

It is not about what we need as a country but what those companies want and pay our politicians to deliver and nothing else.

They could not give a rat's ass if they make our or any country a bankrupt, barren wasteland where we are lying on the scorched earth starving to death so long as they get that.

8. and keeping the car in tune,
and car pooling, public transport, telecommuting, making fewer trips, proper braking, avoiding jack rabbit starts, using the cruise control, driving slower, etc. etc.

If $3/$4 gallon gasoline won't get people to conserve I don't know what will. $8 gas?
