Sarah Palin: President Obama pushing racial 'myth'

Former Alaska GOP Gov. Sarah Palin on Tuesday night declared that there is “no ability or opportunity” for the new Arizona immigration law to encourage racial profiling, and blamed Barack Obama for “perpetuating this myth.”

The new law allows police offices to stop anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant and ask to see documents proving their legal status. If the person cannot provide the documents, Arizona police now have the right to detain them until the federal government can prove they are legal.

Civil rights activists have decried the new law as “racist,” but Palin dismissed the attacks during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

“There is no ability or opportunity in there for the racial profiling,” she said. “Shame on the lame stream media again for turning this into something that it is not.”

Palin then blamed the president for allowing the “myth” that the law allows racial profiling to take hold.

“It's shameful, too, that the Obama administration has allowed...this to become more of a racial issue by perpetuating this myth that racial profiling is a part of this law,” she said.

1. Why, oh why, can't somebody ask her just how the police will have reasonable suspicions that someone
is in the country illegally?

We have no reason to come up with decent reasons for such suspicions and no patience for seeing if anybody else can.

I don't think they can come up with any that (a) aren't racist and (b) have wide-ranging applicability. But that doesn't mean that they can't come up with grounds that (a) aren't racist and (b) have a narrow range of applications. In fact, I can do that myself without my two brains cells engaging in much effort.

I'm a traffic cop and I stop a driver. He's obviously over 18 years old. He has a driver's license. When it's run it turns out that the number's associated with Gertrude McFarlane in Prescott but his name is unknown to the MVD. You see his matricula consular in his wallet when he takes out his driver's license and it has a different name on it. Conclusion: His AZ ID's forged, he's a Mexican national. Is he here legally? Maybe not. Probably not. "Reasonable suspicion."

Now, if instead of a matricula consular he had a Russian ID and his name was Vasilii Artemovich Gorchuk would the traffic cop be as likely to check his status? Perhaps not. Perhaps so. But for that you need data. Actual facts, not speculation and suspicion and fear.

I personally think that this law will have very limited application precisely in order to avoid disparate-impact and racism charges. I could be wrong, and if the law survives various more abstract Constitutional challenges perhaps the guidelines will be racist on their face.

6. Guess it depends on whether you stopped the driver because he did something illegal or because he
looked as if he was Mexican.

There might be a handful of police like you in Arizona or there might be a ton of them involved with anti-immigration groups who will use this law to harass brown-skinned people. I think we will see portions of the bill, including the one that talks about 'reasonable suspicion' of being illegally in the country thrown out as unConstitutional.
